I’m studying 10th grade right know in Turkey.I’ planning to apply exeter and andover for 2021 academic year but also need financial aid.My grades are staight A’s according to US grades. My math is really good and I am interested in literacy and languages also I love theater, have taken places in a few plays. Is it a chance for me to get in?
Hey there!
From what I know about Exeter and Andover, both are need-blind schools, meaning that they don’t take an applicant’s financial status into consideration for admission. I also hear that they give a lot of great aid to students who need it. I think that if you show a demonstrated need for financial aid, you will get it.
Now, getting admission is the harder part. These schools are really competitive so it is not an easy feat. However, I believe in you and I know you can do it. My best advice to you would be to start preparing for the standardized tests (SSAT/ISEE) which are part of the application process. Once the schools begin to open up applications for the 2021-2022 school year, you can start coming up with ideas and formulating drafts for essays. Most importantly, try to think of something unique about yourself. What will you contribute to the Exeter/Andover community? I think if you keep that in mind and fabricate that kind of information in your essays/interviews, you can make a good impression.
Oh, and one more thing. I advise that you should consider applying to some other top private schools as well. I’ve heard that if you try to apply to a lot of different schools, you have a higher chance of “hitting the target” in at least one of them. A lot of the essays for these schools are actually very similar, so it won’t be as much work as you think it might be.
Anyways, good luck with your application! Sorry for the long post.
Thanks for your answer!
Sure, no problem! Let me know how it goes, and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
Note: Andover’s need-blind, tho Exeter technically isn’t. However, it definitely doesn’t take financial aid into account as much as most other schools.
Applying as an international student is going to obviously be tougher, but it’s possible, and international applicants have definitely gotten in.
Another problem for you could be your age- what grade are you applying to? 10th repeat or 11th? Both are rather hard, especially 11th since most seats go to incoming 9th graders. Still, it’s not impossible.
Like what @highschoolperson said, you should apply for more schools if you really want to get into a US boarding school. Andover and Exeter are both very competitive for every type of applicant. (well maybe except multi-generation legacies with have donated millions, or children of a faculty member  )
Really REALLY focus on your essay+ interview. From my experience and most others on this forum, just good grades and SSAT won’t let you in.
Take all my advice with a grain of salt tho- it’s coming from an Andover and Exeter reject
As a waitlist parent of Andover and Exeter, it is really really tough to get into any of these for an international applicant! Good Luck!!!
Firstly, thanks for your answer! And yes I totally agree with you I’m planning to apply for 11th grade which makes the situation even harder as you said . I’ve searched about other schools to I also keep others in my mind too
Thanks! Good luck with you child too!
