Can I get into the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

I’d love to go to the University of Michigan, and they accept about 30%, and I’m unsure if I’d be included in that 30%

My stats:
AP tests -
(10) Psych - 5
(11) English Lang and Comp - 4
(11) Bio - 4
(11) Calc BC - 4 (5 AB Subscore)

Senior schedule:
Calc 3/Differential equations at my local college
Band(Trumpet)/Orchestra (violin)
AP English
Spanish IV
Anatomy
Government
Jazz Band
Physics online

Self Studying for both physics C exams and AP statistics
I did it for the calc 2 part of the BC test and did pretty well

ECs
Varsity xc and track but never to state
JV soccer
Math club (won several individual and team competitions and team captain)
Science bowl (3rd place team at state)
NHS
Debate (state quarter-finalist)
State band grades 10 and 11 and state and regional solo and ensemble awards 9/10/11 and honor bands
about 75 volunteer hours every year
youth symphony for trumpet by audition

Do I have a shot?

In state or OOS? GPA? ACT? SAT? All of those things matter more than AP scores and ECs.

What is your GPA (unweighted) and what are your SAT/ACT scores?

OOS,
GPA is 4.0 unweighted, i think it’s 4.34 weighted
ACT with writing is 34
sat subject tests:
math 2 - 780
Biology E - 700 (rough, I know)

I think you have a pretty good shot. EC’s are a bit average, but if you sell yourself well, I think you might be able to compensate and squeak by.

What is your intended major?
UMich’s admission rate is actually 26% this year. For OOS, it would be below 20%. Your GPA is good and course rigor is fine. Your test score is near 75th percentile too (depending on which school you are applying to). UMich would be a very high match for LSA and a low reach for CoE.

I’m applying for engineering. Is there anyway I could make my application more competitive or any ecs that would stand out?
@96blue @QuiteAverage90

@hb7901 I think you should spend a lot of time on your essays and make them good, because you look very competitive in terms of GPA/test scores/extracurriculars.

I agree that you should work on your essay. For test score, ACT 34 is right at (perhaps below now) the 75th percentile in the last couple years. How are the section scores, particularly your Math score. CoE is getting very competitive these days and the average admission ACT was 33 last year. So 34 isn’t really standing out.

ACT subscores:
english 35
math 35
reading 35
science 32
@billcsho

and thanks to everyone for their input I’ll definitely spend a lot of time on essays

If you plan to visit UMich soon, check out their TechDay at CoE this Fall. Quota is limited.

Agree that you have a decent shot. Your GPA and scores are where they need to be. Good luck and write well
