Can I get into these schools as a transfer with a 3.5?

Hi everyone!

I am a first year community college student. I will be transferring as a second year. I applied to 9 schools over winter break and would like to know what realistically my chances are.

I am looking to transfer from community college to a 4 year university this fall.

These are the schools I’m applying to–

  • Cornell University
  • University of Rochester
  • SUNY University at Buffalo
  • Penn State
  • UVA
  • George Mason University
  • University of Delaware
  • Ohio University
  • Xavier University

I realize that Cornell is a HUGE reach. I just wanted to give it a shot and see if I could get in, not that I am expecting to get in.

Rochester will probably be a bit of a reach, but not as much as Cornell. I am going to do a transfer interview in the spring, which I am told can help your application.

UVA is my dream school. I am out of state, so I am unsure if my chances are lower because of that.

Here are my college stats–

First semester (fall 2019): 16 credits, 3.15 gpa

  • Intermediate Algebra ©
  • English Composition 1 (B+)
  • United States History to 1865 (A)
  • Elementary French 1 (A)
  • Intro Astronomy (B)
Second semester (spring 2020/current semester): 16 credits, hopefully 4.00
  • Intro Probability and Statistics
  • Health and Wellness
  • Intro Philosophy
  • Intro Sociology
  • Intro Theater

32 total credits

I hope to get all A’s this semester. My classes are less strenuous and I am not working nearly as much as I was.

If I get all A’s this semester my final gpa would be a 3.56.

High School stats–

My gpa was a 2.9 and I did not take the sat. My counselor persuaded me to not take the sat because I wouldn’t need it for community college. I wish that I would have taken it, but ultimately it was my fault not his. I know my gpa is dismal, but I had several medical problems, which I would prefer to not go into.

I would appreciate any input anyone has to offer, thank you!

With only one semester of college to show, your high school record will still be significant in transfer admission.
