I sucked in high school, really sucked. I skipped a lot of classes and had a finial GPA for 1.6 or so. I scored in the top my class on all state test though. Went to community college(Northern Virginia Community College) and have killed it. I have a 4.0 and my SAT was 2100. I really want to go to either Berkeley, Northwestern, UCLA, UPenn, and for a super long shot Columbia. My question is do I stand any real chance? A lot of them ask to see high school transcripts as part of the transfer application process. This is why I am concerned. With my absolute sucking in high school is there any shot of getting in? If worst comes to worst I am guaranteed admission to UVA and that is where I will go. Am I wasting my time applying to these schools?

UCs do not need anything from high school for those applying to transfer at the junior level. However, for non-resident students, financial aid will not cover the $23,000 additional non-resident tuition. See their net price calculators.

Check the private schools’ financial aid policies to see if they will offer sufficient financial aid for you as a transfer student. However, chance of admission may be less if they require high school records even for junior level transfers.

Yes, you do have a shot. When I went to Penn, I knew at least one CC transfer. Honestly though, Columbia vs. Penn should be about the same except for the Fu School.

You should also consider things other than GPA and SAT though, like extracurriculars - what else do you have to offer? And that you likely will be admitted as a sophomore at best, a freshman at worst at an Ivy. CC courses are generally not that tough. You could consider taking some AP tests, or at least some practice ones, to see where you are at. If you do well on AP practice tests (4 or 5), you should be fine at an Ivy.

I really doubt you’d be able to transfer anything to an Ivy from a CC. Conversely, I would bet that NVCC transfer to UVA easily, with full credit. Here is the list: <a href=“500 - Error - Northern Virginia Community College”>500 - Error - Northern Virginia Community College; William and Mary is not exactly chopped liver…

Some CCs keep a list of where their graduates go on to a 4-year college. My local CC has sent a few kids to Ivy League schools.

Good luck! I’m glad you changed your mind and are using your ability. Many students would benefit from going to a CC to find out what they want to do and how they want to do it.

Since you have a guaranteed safety you are in a good position. What do you really have to be concerned about. Just own it and let them see and understand your story. Why pay 55k OOS for Berkeley or UCLA if you have an instate price at another high ranked public? You will be paying full price. Please check the transfer student forum, there are students in similar position and you can sift through for success stories, or those individual colleges have transfer student threads.

If the Ivy League school accepts transfer students from CCs, why would you doubt being able to transfer any credit or subject credit?
