I’m in state, from an excellent and highly ranked public school that has lots of students admitted to Michigan every year. I have great college essays and two stellar letters of recommendation from an AP teacher and a counselor. I have a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 3.97 weighted GPA. I’ve excelled in all of my AP classes, and I even got 100% in my AP Gov class this year. Last year as a sophomore my grades dropped a lot bit at the end and I got a few Bs due to my parent’s very ugly divorce that resulted in lots of stress and anxiety for me. I scored a 1350 on the SAT, and a 8/7/8 on the essay. I’m debating taking the essay over again to try and get a perfect score. In terms of extracurriculars, most notably I’m a swimmer. I’m on my high school varsity team and was a member of the state team last year where my team placed second overall. I was voted a captain for my senior season. I have All-American consideration, and am currently waiting on All-State and All-American Academic Honors. I also am an AP Scholar. I swim on a club team the rest of the year, and practice 10-15 hours a week for that. I also am very involved at a summer swim club. I swim there about 20 hours a week in the summer, I lifeguard there, and I also have been a volunteer coach. I was a sports journalist for my school this past year and will continue that this year as well. I volunteer at a local library, and I’m going to start volunteering at U of M this summer in a special program to help prevent and spread awareness about sexual violence, because that is something I’m very passionate about. I’m a member of my school’s Key Club as well. What are my chances at getting into Michigan being in-state, and applying early decision?
I’d say you have a great chance, especially since you’re IS. You might want to consider retaking the SAT not just for the essay, but for your actual score, as a 1350 is pushing it.
However, your SAT seems to be the only potential downside to your app, so if you focus on that this summer (you should probably register within the next week or two - the spots fill up fast), either through [free demo] UWorld (see reddit: Donald Keyman) or other prep material, you should be able to get that up to at least a 1400+, which should improve your chances.
I would definitely say retake your SAT. I found that tutoring was incredibly helpful and raised my score by 100 points. The average score for Michigan is about a 1450 so you want to be closer to that and no less that 1400
I agree with retaking the SAT.
And remember that MI is an EA school, not ED. Are you being recruited as a swimmer? That would help immensely.
I don’t think you need to retake the sat unless you feel like it’s necessary. Focus on writing great essays and demonstrating interest
You are likely to be admitted. But apply elsewhere as well. Seems as though you should be a recruited swimmer. If you are in need of financial aid, try Kalamazoo College. They like swimmers.
If you want to retake a standardized test, consider the ACT. But, as is, you look good for one of the best universities in the world–Michigan.
Your stats are very similar to my that of my son, except he scored higher on the SAT (1500). So take the SAT again and try to get a higher score. My son was waitlisted and got off the WL at the end of June.
A good chance of admission if you improve your SAT, and aren’t applying to Ross or COE. Those two are tougher to get into.
Michigan doesnt have ED, it offers EA, and only a small percentage is admitted from EA.
You could help your chance if you score higher, but the latest SAT in time is in Sept, weeks away.
Practice and study the problems you get wrong. When you stop seeing progression then try Kaplan. I increased my score by 150 in months with the help of my tutor.
Good luck, Im going for Michgan as well. Lets hook up if we both get in.
Retake the sat and essay is no longer needed starting Aug 1st. https://record.umich.edu/articles/admissions-office-drops-requirement-act-sat-writing-components
I posted this also on Cc here.
There will be a section on the common app to quickly explain your grade drop due to your parents divorce also. Don’t make excuses just a quick, this is why statement.
