Can I get into University of Michigan with a Low Sat but good GPA?

I applied to LS&A through early action.

I have a 4.1389 weighed and 3.89 unweighed.

I’ve gotten a 4 on the following AP courses: Government & Politics: United States, English Language & Composition, United States History, and Psychology which I self-studied; and a 3 in Biology. I am in an advanced stem program for half the school day and am an instate student.

I think I have strong personal essays, letter of recs, and extracurriculars, although, my SAT is really below average. I’ve got a 1160 on the school proctored exam, and a 1250 on the October exam with a 21/24 on the essay portion. I had to send both due to the October results coming in late. I’m from a low income family if that means anything. I really never took the SATs as seriously as I should have.

I’m also currently taking APES, AP Calc, AP Lit, and 2 college course for my senior year.

Because you’re in-state/lower income you have a shot. An OOS applicant wouldn’t.

I’m also rank 18/532.

You’re not a shoo-in, but you already know that. Michigan is a reach for almost everybody, you included. So, you have A shot.
But it’s not a match.
So, what’s your EFC (O?) and where else are you applying?

Yeah my efc is 0, I haven’t applied OOS yet I’m waiting for my umich decision to bother with any of that. So far I only applied to Wayne State University and Detroit Mercy and I got in both already although I’d much rather go to Michigan. I also have a disability which I wrote about in my common app essay if that makes me anymore of a minority they’d be interested on. I’m also Middle Eastern. Thanks for the help!

MI State may be another good option for you to look into.

.

Look at Naviance at your school. Has anyone ever got in with this sat score? You really need to get to like 1380 to just be in the running. 1400 and above for instate is starting to be competitive.

Start looking at other schools. You will be deferred with like, everyone else. Maybe another shot at the Sat/Act?

Wayne is great and a very in demand school. Mich State is a great school.

You’re right that Michigan is better than Wayne State in terms of opportunities. One is a reach the other is a safety. You need 5 additional matches.

You need to run the NPC and apply more widely.
Run the Net price calculator on:
Albion, Alma, Michigan State, Kalamazoo, Beloit, Lawrence, Carthage, Gustavus Adolphus, Earlham, Grinnell, Dickinson, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, Allegheny, Muhlenberg, Goucher, St Lawrence, Hobart & William Smith - all are strong colleges, pick the 5-6 best deals financially.
Apply to Grand valley State and Oakland.
At Wayne State as well as Grand Valley State and Oakland apply to the honors college.
Have your 1250 recorded on your transcript by your guidance counselor and make sure she/he has included a school profile.

@Knowsstuff My school’s average SAT score in 2018 was 957.8. We get at least 20 accepted every year.

Since you’re like top 3-5% your odds are decent, but I urge you to send the apps recommended above just in case.

@MYOS1634 Thanks so much for the advice and help, although I basically settled for Wayne as a secondary choice since I got a really good scholarship from them and it’a driving distance from home. I might sound dumb but I’m only really interested in leaving home in the case I get into a school as good as Michigan

@mich110 that is great that you are that much higher then your schools avg. So the next question is… What is the avg sat of those that get accepted to Michigan? That should give you a better idea of where you stand currently. If your school uses Naviance it should be on there.

@Knowsstuff No my school doesn’t use naviance unfortunately. I’m planning on taking the SAT again in December though these curves have been brutal.

Your regional counselor for your school from Michigan should have that answer. Look them up on the Michigan admission site. Email a question. It’s good to have some contact since they will be helping to make the decision.

It can’t be all or nothing.
There are lots of schools that are better than Wayne and will offer you more opportunities, a new horizon, a strong alumni network, better odds of graduating in 4 years.
I understand that it’s scary to take the leap but that’s what college is for.
Strong students at well off schools have this system: 2 safeties, 5-6 matches, as many reaches as you wish or can handle. As you know, they don’t get the horrible end of the stick. That formula ensures the best combination of opportunities and value. Don’t limit yourself.
Kalamazoo, Beloit, Allegheny, Muhlenberg, Hobart are better than Wayne State and roughly double your odds of graduating in 4 years.
Lawrence, Dickinson, Grinnell, St Lawrence are reaches - not as high as UMichigan but reaches nevertheless. At a minimum apply to these 4. If you get into UMich, well, things are good. If you don’t, you’ll have strong choices.

In state you have a chance. Out of state pretty much none
