What school did you apply to for Penn? It seems to make a difference.

And also, what are your SAT II scores?

The answer to your question is yes, you can get into both those schools you mentioned. Will you? Your stats and EC’s are strong enough to give as good or a better chance than most applicants, but who knows. I’m going:
Penn : 25%
Harvard: 15%

I’m pretty sure you’d get into Penn.

Penn apparently loves rank haha.

I’m saludatorian too in my class of 957…
SAT score lower than yours with 2230
Not nearly as many ECs as you but also active in Key Club
7, not 9 APs…

and I got in, so best of luck to you :-)

Need SAT II’s, and EC’s are a little broad, but there are a lot of great parts of your stats right now. Get good recs and essays and you have decent chances.

I am a junior in high school… with high prospects for getting into an Ivy League. I’m from the bay area in california and attend Mission San Jose High School, the #1 Public School in CA and one of the top 20 or so in the nation. I was wondering you could all assess my situation with some general details I will provide below (I can provide extreme specifics if you want). Just a heads up: my school’s class rank system is unorthodox. The, let’s say 34 (graduating class of 2009 count) 4.0 students at the end of senior year receive the class rank 1, then the students with the next highest unweighted GPA receive the class rank of 35, so on so forth. It is purely based on GPA and NO other factors are considered. It seems like this will be extremely detrimental in my application… My school also does not allow students to take weighted classes during sophomore year.

GPA: Unweighted - 3.8 Weighted - 4.15 for UC system (could raise to 4.3 depending on the college/university)
SAT: 2200
Class Rank: ~ 100 but will go down as the top ranked students start taking the hardest courses (class of 600 people)

5 AP’s by the time I graduate
I have taken all Honors courses possible at my school

Extra Curriculars:
-Eagle Scout
-300 hours + community service
-President of New Global Citizens (youth philanthropy club I started) - raised over $10,000
-President and founder of the Magic Club
-Spanish Honors Society member
-M.O.F.O. member (Mission Outdoor Focus Organization co-founder; group of boy scouts)
-MASH (Math and Science Help tutor; our school’s student-run tutor program)
-I started my own free tutor program where I tutor students on SAT writing and Essay
-Special Youth member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians

Will be attending Upenn Summer Biomedical Research Academy OR Stanford Biotechnology Academy OR Stanford Business academy (over the summer; final decision to be made soon)

I will be getting some very strong letters of recommendation from teachers I have had for honors and AP level courses, as well as a rare opportunity for the vice principal of my school to write a letter for me (which he rarely does for students)

Thanks for reading all of this, and I am completely welcome to Anything you have to say.

ED Penn for your best shot. For Harvard your scores are low and EC’s probably not competitive. For Penn your stats are strong and it’s one of the few ivies with a genuine ED boost. I think you’d have a good shot ED.

I don’t think the stats are low for Harvard. You need to focus your ECs, though.

thanks for the advice. I find i’ve done an ok variety of stuff, but there’s no real hook, line, and sink… or a “capping achievement” for lack of a better term. I’m probably going to have some stuff published in magic this summer… don’t know if that will help or not

hey thekingofcards

you will get into any college you want once you get your head out of the clouds and stop acting liek kanye west.

you are the most arrogant person i have ever heard. dont let that permeate through your personal statement.

you will not get into harvard however unless you sure swine flu, cancer and aids. which i am sure you will do this summer.

if only anyone could be 1/100 the intelligence of you then the world would be a better place. you are the greatest person i have ever heard. you should cure the worldwide recession this year, though.

i do not understand why you are complaining. most people who are even a little bit smart are shoved underground by your greatness.

Wow, what are you basing that school ranking off of?

@ RFK68 - The school ranking system is solely based on GPA (unweighted). There are absolutely no other factors

@ simpsonman - I’m sorry that I appear extremely arrogant. In fact, I thank you for your criticism because it is probably one of the most, if not the most, constructive criticism I have ever received? I merely posted here because I saw Upenn and didn’t want to bother people with yet another single thread about “situation assessing.” Harvard hasn’t, and will not be, a dream school for me. I’ve been to Penn, love the campus, and love even more the feeling I get walking around that place. As I stated at the beginning of my post, I just want people’s honest opinions. Thanks for yours. I guess I have some serious “shaping up” work to do if I actually appear like this to people in a single post

@ Sid110293me:

Whittle down your ECs to what you were extremely involved in. Right now it is almost overwhelming and begins to seem like a laundry list. You have excellent stats and excellent chances at both schools.

I got into UPenn with less than half of that, I think what helped the most was my interview, where I demonstrated my ability at the age of 18 to project substantial amounts of income. I also brought along my portfolio to show how capable I was of strategic investments. I feel the thing they look for MOST at Harvard and Penn is your aptitude as a person to succeed in life with no help from mommy or daddy.

GPA: Unweighted - 3.6~ Weighted - 4.75<
SAT: 1950 (780 math, 590 verbal, 580 writing)
Class Rank: 41/580~

All honors, 12 APs

Also held many leadership positions in a variety of clubs similar to what was listed by Sid110293me; however, what distinguished me from other applicants was my time volunteering at a local Hospice center.

Help! What are my chances at UPenn?

Desired Major: Political Science

SAT:2040 CR: 700 M:650 W:690 Essay:11 (I know these are low, but I’m taking it again plus the ACT because I perform better on it in practice tests)

GPA (unweighted):4.0 Weighted: 4.31

5 APs + 4 College Dual Enrollment Classes
