Can I not go to a university after having accepted the offer?

I have an offer from University X. I accept it by May 1st (and pay the deposit), but then a few months later I decide I don't want to go to that university, and don't turn up for orientation week.

What are the consequences?

You lose your deposit. That’s the only consequence. Happens to lots of people who withdraw their acceptances after getting off other colleges’ waitlists.

Notify the school that you will not be attending. You will forfeit your deposit. No other consequences.

It is called “summer melt”.

Of course! What do you think all the kids accepted off waitlists do? You lose your deposit and move on.

Courtesy says that if you decide to not attend, call and let them know. They will give your spot to someone else. You might get some of your $ back too. It’s just rude to not show up, having them prepare materials for you, a no-show.
