Can I still get into a good UC?

This freshman year didn’t go how I expected it to. I’ve gotten all As, except for one D in honors alg 2. (first semester) In second semester, I got all As and a C in honors alg 2. I read on the UC website that if you get a D first semester but a C second semester, the math course will be validated, so I don’t have to retake a semester over the summer. I’ve been going through family problems and math is the only subject that doesn’t come easy to me. PS: I will be taking many honors and AP classes (weighted classes) in my sophomore and junior year. If I get straight As for the rest of high school will I have a chance of getting into a top UC? Freshman grades aren’t calculated in the GPA either, right?

UC’s do not include Freshman grades in their UC GPA calculation. As long as you do well in all of the rest of your classes the next 2 years and complete the a-g course requirements, you should be fine. There is no way to tell if you can get into a top UC (all UC’s are excellent), but work hard, study for the SAT/ACT and get involved in some EC’s that you enjoy. At the end of Junior year, calculate your UC GPA: http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/. Post your results along with test scores and EC’s and experienced posters have gauge your chances. Good Luck.
