I'm a freshman, and the counselor in 8th grade told my classes that we couldn't do APs freshman year, however for some reason I found there are still others I know of that are taking it, and it's already too late for me to change classes!

Anyways the ideal is around a 4.7 GPA, but will freshman year decrease the possibility of me getting in?!

This is actually really strange to me; I think our valedictorian’s GPA last year was only a 4.6 weighted, how do you even get that high? Anyway, most schools don’t really look at freshman year grades, and if they’re technically not offered to you, then it’s not a big deal. Don’t worry about it; in fact, take this year to maybe find some ECs you like. As high school goes on and you get busier, you might not have as much time for them as usual. AND GET YOUR SAT/ACT STUFF DONE AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN, IT’S SO HELPFUL.

Anyway, back on topic, you should be good, don’t worry about it!

@leannatorres: Every high school has a slightly different grading scale, which is why high schools send a “profile” of their school to colleges along with student transcripts. Profile’s are like rubrics that decode grades – so it’s unfair and inaccurate to directly compare a 4.6 GPA at one high school with a 4.7 GPA at another school. And, FWIW, most colleges, including Harvard, DO look at freshman grades – it’s actually the rare college that doesn’t consider freshman grades. I know you were trying to be helpful, but it’s best to not give out wrong information.

@curiosity080512: Please speak with your 9th grade guidance counselor, as you seem to be getting your information from second hand sources. Your GC will ultimately have to rate the rigor of your course load when you apply to college, so you need to have a conversation with them and see what is appropriate at your high school.

@gibby, I’mm sorry, I should have clarified. You are correct, high schools do have different grading; it is always kind of a shock to me to see people getting above a 4.6, just a personal reaction. But thank you for helping, I was actually under the impression that most colleges didn’t look at freshman year, which I was actually upset about. Do you know for sure if Duke does, by any chance? Thanks for the clarifications regardless!
