Can i take summer classes?

Hi Im still waiting on my acceptance letters but due to my work schedule I have been struggling in my math class. I am still going to finish the class and try to pass the class. I have already taken all the IGETC including the required math courses. The math course I am taking is a prereq for my major and will push me over the 60unit minumum. So in other words if I fail the math course I will be around 3 units short of 60 and not finish the prereq for my major. I plan on going to UCSD or UCI and I was wondering if either of those schools allow me to retake a course over the summer.

My question is should I notify the school I plan on attending before I fail the class to see what I should do with the possibility of failing the class? Or should I wait to see if I fail then notify the school.

thanks.

Unfortunately, if you don’t complete that course you’re going to get rescinded. You’re only accepted to a UC on a provisional basis and when you sign the SIR to declare your intent to register you have to sign a contract. One of the conditions is that you pass all of your planned coursework and meet all the conditions for admissions by the end of spring. You can view the UCSD contract here:
http://img.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/v1...es/contrat.png

UCSD and most of the UCs are NOT flexible on those conditions, ESPECIALLY not the one about having 60 units. At some of the lower tier UCs you can get away with completing some of the pre-reqs in summer; I’m not sure what the case is if you fail a pre-req and try to repeat it. Typically admissions officers don’t like to see you having to repeat a course you’re already taken at the last minute (that being Spring) because they won’t receive your grades before they make their decision. It seems unlikely that if you struggled with a course once that they’d be inclined to offer you acceptance when they have no guarantee that you’ll pass it again or will even see your grades before they accept. Also official transcripts are due July 15, which allows them time to go over them and make sure everything checks out before you enroll. You’d have to complete a summer course and send in your transcripts before then. UCSC had a policy last year that allowed biology majors to complete pre-reqs in summer or defer enrollment until winter, but that was barring you completed all of the other conditions for enrollment. UCSD and UCI have never had similar policies as far as I know.

If I were you I would find a late-start 3 unit course that’s transferable to ensure that you have 60 units by the end of Spring. The 60 unit requirement is a hard, core requirement that you must complete to even be eligible to transfer at any UC, even UC Merced. Also, it would probably be in your best interest to call admissions and ask what the best course of action is, they’ll probably just tell you have to pass the class. You can be vague and don’t have to give them any personal information, so it’s not like they’re not going to identify you and reject your application on the spot, which they wouldn’t do even if you give them your information to pull up your application.

we have late start classes at Monterey Peninsula College, I think they are starting this week. Some of them are online and transferable, so you might try that. If you are attending any CCC you should be able to add a class from our school without too much trouble, and no additional enrollment fees. Just go to your admissions office, but be sure to sign up asap. Good luck. www.mpc.edu
