I read on a thread on here that UC's do not take summer courses that are needed in order to transfer to a UC - i guess i mean they don't take classes that are pre-reqs? I don't know how true that is. I'm confused.

For the most part, you can’t complete transfer requirements the summer right before you transfer. So if you are starting a UC in Fall 2009, your 60 units and IGETC must be completed by Spring 2009. Past summers of course are fine . . . they’re regular classes, and there’s no reason why UCs wouldn’t accept them. You can also complete prereq requirements the summer before transfer, although it is better to have these already done. Furthermore, getting a D or F the summer before transfer can still result in a rescind of your acceptance.

ohh ok. that cleared up tons. thank you!

can you still complete classes that are apart of IGETC?

No you can not = you have to complete 60 units and IGETC (if that is your method of fulfilling GE requirements) by the end of Spring Prior to transfer.

Additionally you should complete all Preqs by that time, however if you have 60 units and GE done by the end of spring you can take some preqs in the summer if you want

I’m confused… I still have one class to fufill my IGETC. Your saying I’m not allowed to take this class over the summer?

Well, did you indicate on your application that you wouldn’t finish this class until the summer? If you were accepted into a UC for Fall 2009, and that university already knows that this class won’t be completed until this summer, then maybe an exception was made in your case. If the UC DOESN’T already know that this class won’t be completed by this Spring . . . then you might have a problem.

You can NOT take classes the summer BEFORE transfer- not over the summer in general.

The only time you can take a required course the summer BEFORE transfer is in the case FeeFee34 noted, that it was on your application and they accepted you knowing you would take the course the summer b4 transfer.

im planning on going to ucm this fall. i dont have 60 units complete however. ucm knew this all along though and as long as i take 12 units in the summer that would put me over 60 units and i can go.

but first off i think they miscounted it, last time i counted i needed about 15 units over summer to have 60 units, so i have to clarify.

also i went to my counseling office today to petition to take 15 units over the summer and the lady just laughed at me. she looked at me and said ‘i cant do it’. i was soooo infuriated.

im not about to say what i felt like doing to her but after talking to her for about 5 minutes trying to convince her that 15 units (of which these classes are simple GE 3 unit classes) over 6 WEEKS in summer with no job is much easier then taking 17 units worth of math, science, and computer science classes over an 18 week semester while at the same time working 40 hours a week, going to school from 730am to 730pm, (which i did all of in the fall) she said ‘go take these extra classes at another school’ and i said ‘alright’ and i left. iv never met anyone so rude during my stay at my ccc. this gives me more belief from when i was told that counselors at my ccc are stupid, dont know anything useful, and dont have your best interests in mind.

sorry for that… just had to let out steam durin this frustrating time of the year

counselors at community colleges want you to stay there as long as possible because it means more money. So in my opinion, i think a lot of counselors have a skewed perception of a student. I’m taking 14 units of summer at my cc and another 3 unit online course. it is doable, it’s just a lot of work.

the counselors at my CC are really nice and approved me taking 10 units this summer(9 unit limit cap in summer) and said i could take another class if i wanted to but yeah im not about to be overloading myself in the summer

has anyone taken calc III over the summer?

Isn’t taking 15 units over the summer the same as trying to take 30 units in a semester . . . which is the same as doing an entire year’s worth of coursework? I’m not saying it’s impossible (my friend took 27 units this last semester), but it’s not that surprising that someone was skeptical. Go to another counselor, email the deans, and then bother them some more if it’s really that important.

As for CCs trying to make students stay longer to make $, I don’t think that’s true anymore. I know all my CCs are overcrowded and classes are being cut due to budgets. Lots of people are going back to school in the bad economy to get better degrees and give themselves an edge in the hiring process. Basically, I think CC counselors are just really used to low expectations and students who take 5 years to transfer for some ungodly reason.
