Can I transfer to UCLA from the first year of CC?

Is it possible to stay one year at a community college, get a high GPA and then transfer, with credits, to a university like UCLA?
(Major: Biology)

Have any of you had any experience with this, also can you suggest any CC which would benefit me for this purpose?

Good luck with that!

Taking all the courses required for your major, completing IGETC and then for your case since you want to transfer to UCLA, I’m assuming you would want to get TAP Certified so you’ll have to take 5 Honor courses in one year is rough. I’m not saying you can’t do it (because a bunch of people have done it), I could have done it since I have billions of AP credit, but it will be hard.

There’s some one year transfer threads at the UC Transfers board. Do a search and they’ll pop up. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Hi RheeL3, thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate how motivating and direct you were
I am browsing the threads now. I think I would be better off actually extending my one year haha
I was also looking into TAP and other programmes to help me transfer once the time comes. But should I be looking at these programmes after I complete IGETC and the courses required for my major at community college or should I bein the programme now, whether it is TAP or CCCP?

Thanks!

in short, 1 year is very possible with AP credits.
without, very hard and i dont know people whove done it.
(fastest i know is a transfer who did it in 1.5 years to berkely with a 4.0 economics major)

there are a lot of factors that will slow you down from transferring in 1 year.

 1. getting classes
 2. your major pre-reqs (depends how many)
 3. how competitive your major is
 4. if you can handle that many classes

but with AP credits you will atleast have 24 credits or so to transfer over so you only need about 40 left

which is very easily attainable in 1 year.

a break down of 1 year of 40 units:
2 full time semesters is only 12 units each and 2 intersessions are 4 units to be full time. thats already 12+12+4+4= 32. and 12 units during a regular semester is only 3 classes, so you can feel free to take up to 18 units.

i did 50 units in 1.5 years pretty stress free.

as for TAP, you would get the info for it and then apply for it when you are going to transfer. you cant take without IGETC, so finish IGETC first. make sure you knock 2 birds with 1 stone by taking classes that fulfill your major pre-reqs and an area of IGETC, thats how you get out in 1 year. work smarter not harder.

gluck!

Thanks!!! Your tips really enlighten my head "make sure you knock 2 birds with 1 stone by taking classes that fulfill your major pre-reqs and an area of IGETC, thats how you get out in 1 year. work smarter not harder. " This one is master :)

I’m not really adding much, but AP credit certainly helps. I transferred after one year in a CCC as an English major and with 30+ semester units of AP credit and careful coursework planning. Bio majors have more pre-reqs, so it’d be much more realistic for you to transfer after two years, unless you’re prepared for inhuman overloading (generally ill-advised imho).

well I certainly wish you luck. It is hard to do it in one year because it is harder and harder to get classes because of the bad economy. But I certainly wish you luck.
