Can more graduated seniors do "actual results" threads?

Quick note: Very late in posting this! Ignoring how “toxic” most people claimed this site to be, I frequented CC for about 2 years (just lurking without an account) before I applied. I learned so much on here from everyone; I can honestly say I wouldn’t be entering my first term at my dream college (or even would have considered it an option for me) in about a month if it wasn’t for CC.

Essays: Writing is my strong suit. For the common app, I wrote about my hair (I’ve dyed my hair every color imaginable) and what it means to me. Other topics in the supplements included making my own cameras and my love for competitive cheer-leading (doing it for 13+ years).

LoR: I didn’t read any of them, but they should have been good. I’m very close to my GC and the two teachers I asked for recs.

Reflection:
Strengths: GPA and scores were great, as were the essays and recs.
Weaknesses: Although I’m proud of my EC’s, they probably paled in comparison to other students that were spending their summers doing research and getting books published. I’d also like to think Tufts and GWU had to do with lack of interest, if the rumors are true.

I agree^^ To anyone that says these “chances?” threads are toxic, this one helped me plan my freshman classes and see how i could improve!! This thread is especially good!

No offense or anything, but how did you mange to get in considering that many other people that had better ( not trying to be rude) applications overall in terms of ecas sat scores and practically everything and tehy giot rejected?

@Sharecentury‌ Really? What made you write a post like this?
You have no idea how the admissions office at Stanford makes its decisions… and neither does d33d33. She has good scores, grades, and ECs, and believes that her essays and recommendations were strong “subjective” qualifications for admission. The answer is right there in her post - but the flaws in your own post go beyond demonstrating illiteracy.

How could anyone possibly answer your question? “How can you justify getting into Stanford when there exist other people with BETTER EVERYTHING who got rejected?” And it escapes me on how you managed to write “no offense or anything” at the beginning of that post without a trace of self-consciousness.

Good job on making this post just after a sequence of people congratulating this thread for avoiding toxicity. (And congratulations to those who have posted their actual results here! Hope this exchange doesn’t derail this thread too much.)

@Sharecentury I think his remark about illiteracy was simply a reference to your abundance of typos in simple words, and he may also have meant that your post and question is rather useless, since all it does is make others uncomfortable. Like @wchuck said, no one here knows exactly how Stanford admissions make decisions, so how do you expect anyone to answer? On the other hand, if d33d33 reads your comment, s/he might feel undeserving and out of place, especially when s/he arrives at Stanford.

Let’s not continue any conversation of this sort, since this is a thread for results, and let’s not remark negatively on anyone else’s results.

I just wanted to make sure that s/he was legitimate and was not lying.

Don’t think I ever posted here

Regrets:
•Not taking first SAT seriously. I took it early but didn’t prep much. I never really thought I would get what I eventually got, so I didn’t even consider top 10 schools. Taking it seriously the second time made me not get much merit because the deadlines had passed.
•Not applying to enough schools. Probably had a shot at a top 10 school.
•Senioritis
•Not caring about grades first 2 years

Can someone chance me please??

This post has been going on for over 10 years! I love CC and I love Stanford!

So happy I finally get to post on this thread with my own results! School doesn’t start for me for another 2 weeks so I thought, why not post now before my schedule becomes crazy hectic?

Essays: I think mine were pretty good! Chose common app topic about my identity, wherein I wrote about how i was diagnosed with JRA, moped around my 1st year of high school, was forced to volunteer at a library and then found out how much I loved volunteering. That working at the summer camp and seeing the kids with issues just as debilitating–if not worse than my own–live their lives without moping helped me realize that I should live my life the same way. And that this experience helped me realize I want to work with children and help them through rough times similar to what I went through.
**Overall, thought my essay was pretty moving

Results:

Rejected: Vanderbilt ED
Waitlisted: UNC Chapel Hill (deferred, then waitlisted), College of William & Mary

ACCEPTED: UCLA (attending), UCSD, UF, UM (with $17,000 scholarship), UMichigan, Tulane (with $25,000 scholarship)

Reflection: DO NOT apply to a school you can’t see yourself happy attending. I REPEAT: DO NOT APPLY TO A SCHOOL YOU CANNOT SEE YOURSELF AT! I applied to Vanderbilt mainly because of its rank and because my family pressured me to. THANK GOD I didn’t get in there, because I wouldn’t have been too happy there. I knew it was very unlikely that I’d get into Vanderbilt but applied anyway. APPLY TO SCHOOLS YOU CAN SEE YOURSELF AT!!!
SATs were way too low (mainly my CR… ouch). Actually glad now that I didn’t get in there. I have a feeling I’ll be much happier at UCLA
I accidentally submitted my SAT IIs to all schools I applied to… I don’t think they messed me up (well, it probably didn’t HELP much with Vanderbilt) but I don’t recommend submitting them to top 30 schools unless you scored 700+.
I think what helped me a lot was my essay and how it tied my ECs together. They weren’t out of this world, but my essay showed that I didn’t just do them for my resume, but that I did them out of pure enjoyment.
To those applying: don’t stress if you don’t get into your top choice(s)! Chances are you’ll be happy wherever you wind up.

Essays: Pitt started out as a safety school, so I didn’t spend much time on the essay. It was about average. About my first time surfing.

Results:

Prospective: Stanford, UCLA, UCB, UCSD, USC, Northwestern, Rice, Tufts, University of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan

Applied: University of Pittsburgh

Rejected: None

Accepted: University of Pittsburgh (Swanson School of Engineering, Bioengineering + University Honors College)

Reflection: It took me a while to realize that there’s no use applying to schools that a) you can’t see yourself at b) are financially illogical and impossible, and c) just for prestige’s sake. My dream has been to go to school in California. Why were NU, Rice, Tufts, and Mich on my list? Prestige. I should have cut them out from the start. I plan on attending grad school, which is why it’s smarter for me to attend an instate university so that I can go where I want afterwards and not be in tremendous debt. Pitt has an AMAZING Bioengineering program w/ coop opportunities and a beautiful campus in the setting that I want. I’m thrilled to be attending next year and happy that I found a place that will put me in such a good place for grad admissions.

@wwsjl23‌ did you get any scholarships from Pitt?

@Julianna5522 I’ll hear about scholarships in November, but hopefully!

The link above is my personal background as an int’l Chinese applicant heading to Unis around the world, so my outcome might be somewhat different from the results that domestic guys get. Nontheless, I think it’s still valuable to post my results online, for prospective int’l’s reference and for more motivation to those who’s feeling distressed.

Admitted: HKU(with a huge scholarship, currently attending); ChineseU of HK; Mcgill(with partial award), Baylor(with partial award), National U of Sg(with binding FA after acceptance);

Waitlisted: Cornell, Vassar, Colby, Kenyon, Wash & Lee(all said no eventually)

Rejected: All the rest(I’m not that distressed with the outcome, since I’m well-aware of the need-aware policies for international students.)

Perhaps my actual result may come as a great surprise to you all, but keep in mind that I’m an international student from China pursuing FA. In such a scenario, regardless of one’s talent or the prestige of the institutions, all the schools become reaches or extreme reaches, so chances are pretty high that an int’l candidate can be rejected everywhere. Granted, there are people(or legends on paper) who manage to receive admission offers from reputed schools such as the Ivies with sufficient financial assistance, yet these guys belong to one of the very few - not just because of the quality of resume, but because of many other factors, or even luck.

Though having lived in a city where educational agents do the utmost to advertise ‘personal packaging’ and the successful cases to Ivies with such assistance, I chose to handle everything in my own style, not so much for any sort of thriftiness(the commission involved could be $30- 50k sometimes) as for my integrity that I ought to endeavor for entry to top universities by devising my own extracurriculars and embracing my own ideas. And thus I worked by myself only throughout the process, without ANY HELP FROM THE EXTERNAL AGENTS - from my band at school to my experiences in one of the top Chinese National Youth Scientist Conferences, I overcame many barriers and eventually won many awards. Even if I had reapt nothing in the process, I still would have cherished these precious memories, for just as we all applaud to those who can’t win the champion in a marathon, so we should all cheer for the process rather than the glittering offer letters.

And then I waited for offers, feeling a sense in limbo occasionally yet often have no time to stew over trifling worries as I looked forward to the Intel ISEF as a part of Chinese delegation. Days, weeks, and months had gradually passed when, at the end of March this year, all the decision letters from US flew into my email and mail box. Waitlists. Rejections. The harsh reality loomed in front of me - with 90% of Chinese applicants willing to pay full-ride(even by selling their family flats) to go to virtually EVERY more or less famed school, FA candidates like me stand nearly no chance to win.

But I have my concerns. I should not rely on resources on family too much, because I’m the person who is going to shape my future. Those who see the Chinese kids riding on fancy Falarris or spending money like a genuine ‘tuhao’ do not understand many aspiring independent Chinese candidates, who strive for the best because we know our responsibilities in our family, who would stay true to ourselves when lured by agents devising all the nice-looking activities that make up a ‘shiny’ resume, who always remain original even when external agents produce batches and batches of students to good schools. Those wanting an easy ride by paying huge sums from family assets of $$ to agents and schools, we all fondly believe, will bear the responsibility that they should shoulder in the future.

Would my post seem kind of cliched? It definitely would, as so many high-achieving international guys had aired their views from a wide array of outstanding schools. However, I still would like to share with you my ideas and thought, because I think whatever is real demands no embellishment, whether at Harvard, Yale or anywhere else. Wish all the studious candidates good luck, and hope that my comments can serve as motivation for you guys(esp. Chinese DIY candidates) to some degrees.

If any of you are looking for a fuller profile I would check out AdmitSee! They don’t give “chances,” but actual result of people who got into certain schools with certain grades, test scores, essays, extracurriculars, etc.

Why you think you were matched/not matched and general comments:

I was really shocked that I got into Williams because my stats are not really that impressive in the extracurricular side. I think my essay was probably the strongest hook. My test scores probably helped me a lot too. If one of the tests don’t work for you, try the other! Don’t be discouraged by the people with their long list of EC’s and awards! I read this thread a lot and my counselor told me that colleges do consider the opportunities that are a available to you in your school and whether you took advantage of them or not.
I do not know the status for my other applications because I had to withdraw them due to a binding acceptance to Williams College.

Essay:
The Common App essay that asks about a place where you feel totally at peace. I wrote about a little 15th century graveyard and church in Wales that I’ve often visited during travel. It was very poetic, with a ton of imagery, and told like a story - I documented walking through the churchyard rather than just explaining it.

Recs:
An awesome one from the hospital where I volunteer, which was absolutely gushing
An awesome one from a professor who taught three of my college courses, again, gushing
A good one from my French teacher, which was flattering but short and to the point
An okay one from my principal, which basically restated accomplishments already known, but probably was impressive just because he’s the principal of a school of over 2,500 students.

EC’s:
Candystriper for two summers at local hospital
Museum docent, responsible for tours and planning exhibits
Smithsonian aquarium touch-tank interpreter
Mountain climbing (listed my most impressive Euro peaks)
Intern for magazine devoted to raising awareness of women’s issues in developing countries
Intern for college’s Center for Media Studies and Journalism, writing articles and making educational videos
President of French Club (Organized and led school’s first spring break trip to Paris)
Yoga Club member
Co-founder of Ecology Club, implementing school’s first recycling program

Honors/Awards:
AP Scholar
Consistent Dean’s List
National French Honor Society
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (at my dual enrolled college, college-level award)
Hospital “Volunteen” award
United States Achievement Academy Award (pretty sure this thing is basically a scam, but I used it anyway)

Never worked
At time of application, I’d overloaded my classes, and was carrying Dual Enrollment (DE) Astronomy, DE Astronomy Lab, DE Western Civ, DE World in the 20th Century, DE Tropical Marine Ecology, DE Marine Biology, French IV Honors, AP Art History, and a volunteer service period, which I received all A’s in.

ACCEPTED: Duke (will attend, full tuition in university grant, responsible for housing, books, and personal expenses)
Applied Early Decision

Also applied to UNorth Carolina - Chapel Hill, Uof Florida, Uof Michigan - Ann Arbor, and UChicago, but had to pull those applications due to ED agreement, before I could see my other decisions.
