thanks!
I am still waiting for more decision letters but I applied to 6 colleges got into 2 so far:
Rider University and Cazenovia University
My stats are just average but below average by CC standards I guess.
GPA: 3.18 UW 3.5 W
SAT scores: 1600 1120 critical reading and math
Extra activities: member of several clubs, did track for a year, assistant web designer with my school’s teacher, and
library community service for 3 years.
Race: I know everyone will say I only got in because I’m black and Native american.
Never held a job
Wrote a decent essay that was graded and checked over by my english teacher and writing teacher
My letters of recc were probably what really got me in because all my teachers wrote good things about me and love me.
I also had a rigorous schedule, mostly all honor classes but only 1 AP class because my school only offers like 3
My class rank is 57 out of 378 so I’m in the top 15% I believe.
I was accepted into rider with a 18k merit scholarship and cazenovia with a 20k scholarship. I was kind of surprised by that.

I don’t get why people post these when they get results from 1 school and they’re waiting to hear back from 10 others… shouldn’t you just wait until you hear back from all of them? I thought that was the point of a results thread…
Decision: Accepted
Tufts University (will attend, applied ED I)
Northeastern University with a $16k scholarship
Fordham University with at least a $15k scholarship
Ohio State University with $18k in scholarships (OOS)

Decision: Deferred
Case Western Reserve University

[] SAT II: 750 Math I, 740 Math II, 730 Bio M

[list]Subjective:
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Computer Tech Club (project manager), literary magazine (co-editor-in-chief), String Orchestra for four years, Social Studies Club, Science Club, National Honor Society
[] Job/Work Experience: Camp Counselor for one summer, administrative assistant at a pre-school for another summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: Teach Catholic education at my local parish (funny part is that I’m not Catholic but that’s a different story haha)
[] Summer Activities: The aforementioned activities, plus I had an internship at a local hospital (top 10 in the US for cardiology) in their biomedical engineering department; I also had a lot of experience in their administrative offices and I helped out the hospitals CAO and a lot of her secretaries with filing, organizing folders, creating spreadsheets and optimizing their organization in general, etc.
[] Essays: Common App was around an 8.5 or 9/10, my Tufts supplements ranged from an 8.5 to a 9.5/10 in my opinion. I worked really hard on them and I think they really showed my personality – I chose semi-risky topics for my essays, but I think that they were interesting/funny enough to make my application memorable. The essays for University of Virginia were pretty good. Only other school that required a supplement that I actually had the chance to apply to was Ohio State and I basically copy and pasted parts of other essays I’ve written, so I guess it wasn’t great haha.
[] Teacher Recommendation: My Intro to Calculus teacher gave a decent recommendation I think (never saw the recommendation), and my English teacher/Spanish teacher (he taught me in both subjects last year) probably gave me a good recommendation. My school is not known for the teachers giving out good recommendations
[] Counselor Rec: Not to get too much into how my school writes the counselor recommendation, but let’s just suffice to say that it’s probably bad. Not that my guidance counselor didn’t like me, but because there’s basically a system where a random senior teacher (who you’ve almost definitely never met) is chosen to write your letter. Long story short, it’s probably not particularly great.
[] Additional Rec: See above.
[] Interview: N/A

[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Hard to say since my parents are divorced and my father owns his own business. Probably around $70k if I had to guess. Very good financial aid package from Tufts, which is based on need.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m an atheist at a Catholic school, which is sort of interesting… (who am I kidding; I’m a boring, white engineering student from affluent Long Island)
[list]Reflection
[] Strengths: Essays, ACT score
[] Weaknesses: Lack of demonstrated interest at some schools, lack of unique activities, basically didn’t stand out as well as I think I could have so I tried to make my essays matter more.
General Comments
I’m pretty sure I got deferred from Case Western to protect their yield and because I showed low interest. I would’ve actually liked to have had the chance to go there. It’s a shame, but I’m very happy to be a Jumbo. I also applied to University of Virginia, but I’ll have to withdraw that application way before I ever hear back from them. I had a few other applications prepared to go, but I’m really happy to be going to Tufts. My main tips for any juniors or people even younger than that would be to do your research early. Get your standardized tests out early, get your research done early, get everything done as early as possible so that you can focus on just being you your senior year. Don’t waste time stressing about standardized test scores or finishing up essays that are pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Just try to make it as stress-free for yourself as possible and try to give yourself as much leeway as possible when you’re finishing up high school.

Reflection
Strengths: Community service oriented, very strong essays, GPA
Weaknesses: Standardized test scores (specifically the science section), no major awards, not that many APs
General Comments: I was very fortunate and blessed to have been accepted to all of the schools I had applied to early and will not have to continue writing applications for the rest of the schools I planned to apply to if I didn’t get into Northwestern. Good luck to everyone else in the application process!
You all can yawn, but here goes…

Applied to: Wichita State University, New Mexico State University
Accepted to: Wichita State University, New Mexico State University
Scholarship prospects: If I make NMF, full ride at Wichita State (my top choice) or tuition+board+$2500 per/sem at NM State. If I stay a NMSF (quite unlikely), I will go with a similar offer from NM State with the stipend at $1,125 per semester.
General comments: I am satisfied with my results and will be happy to attend either university. I am very glad I made NMSF as it has made a path for me to find substantial merit aid. Best wishes to all the Class of 2015!
Can the argument be made that SAT is a good indicator of the value of your GPA???
Your take guys… All these kids(in general) with 4.0-4.3 GPA’s and like 1800 SAT’s…
@lifeishard The whole reason that standardized testing is around is to give an objective evaluation of a student’s abilities. Many schools make it very easy for students to get high GPAs (grade inflation).
Then again, SATs aren’t a perfect measurement of ability either. Looking at both, in context, gives a solid picture of academic ability.
(Just for everyone’s information, I’m actually a member of the Class of 2012. But my stats and stuff might still be relevant since they’re not that old, so I’m posting them here just in case.)

Recommendation Letters: Most of my recommendation letters, which came from my College Counselor, my school’s Class of 2012 guidance counselor, and my teachers, were fantastic. The counselors knew me well because I would constantly see them (almost every day due to my paranoia, haha), so they had a lot to say about me. My teachers also knew me well because not only was I an active participant in class, but I also interacted with them quite often outside of class. For that same reason, even the only “OK” one that I saw was pretty good (the teacher in question knew me less than the others who also wrote me letters did, but she still knew me well enough).
Essays: Don’t remember what I wrote about for my essays or if they were any good anymore

- School Type: Private (Roman Catholic)
- Location: Florida
- Ethnicity: Hispanic
- Gender: Female
- Income Bracket: $25,000 (my EFC was 752)
- Hooks: First Generation student
Strengths: All of my letters of recommendation, my GPA, the number of dual enrollment classes that I took, my reading (English) as well as writing test scores, and my extracurriculars
Weaknesses: My science ACT score (the one from my first attempt was actually below the recommended benchmark for my grade level at the time) and my math test scores (I’d say that they were either average or only slightly above average)
General Comments: Don’t ever give up on your dreams! I honestly thought that I’d never be able to go to college, especially after I saw my EFC for the first time (because I didn’t understand at the time that having a low EFC would net me a LOT of aid). But I still worked my butt off because I was hoping for a miracle, and not only did I end up getting accepted to 10 universities (including UM, which I never thought I’d get into), but I also ended up getting scholarship offers of some kind from all 10 of those institutions, most of which were for a lot of money. In fact, I was actually being paid to attend FIU as an undergraduate! (I actually just graduated with my Bachelor’s, haha…) Also, take advantage of the resources and educational opportunities at your disposal! For example, I applied to all of the aforementioned universities only because I got both SAT and ACT college fee waivers (my school counselors introduced me to them) for eight of them. Finally, try to get to know your teachers AND your guidance counselor(s) early so that they’re able to write compelling, individualized recommendation letters for you (so that they don’t have to waste time thinking about what they can say about you that your transcripts don’t already).
I wish all of you who are currently going through the application process the best of luck! I hope that all of you get into your dream schools or, at the very least, schools that you’ll enjoy attending, and I hope that all of your educational dreams come true!

Reflection
[ul]ESSAYS ARE IMPORTANT. I can’t stress this enough. If top schools wanted numbers only, they’d simply choose kids with 2400 SAT scores and dozens of excessive ECs and leave the rest of us to fend for ourselves. This is not the case, however. Essays are the only way (besides an interview) that will show the human aspect of your application to the admissions staff; they let you tell your life story, as cheesy as that sounds. Be unique, be frank, and, most importantly, be genuine. This is not to say that your academics–grades, test scores, honours, awards–do not matter. However, the only way you’ll differentiate yourself from the thousands of other applicants is by writing a memorable, passionate story that shows your drive, your ambition to go to that college.
By all means, don’t let the “Chance Me” thread or the CC community get your spirits down. I was told that my “mediocre” academics and “lacking” ECs (not to mention my ethnicity) made the top schools a very distant and unlikely dream. I’m forever glad I didn’t take these suggestions to heart! Don’t let the pessimists ruin what remains of your high school and childhood years. Take hard classes you actually care about, not hard classes you think will make you look “well-rounded”. (Note: admissions officers are trained to catch such fluff work.) You also need to have realistic expectations. I realise I’m one of the lucky few to be accepted early, much less accepted at all. It’s very possible you may be rejected from each of the top “reach” schools you applied to. Despite this, never give up hope, and good luck to you all!

@lifeishard I have the second highest SAT score in my school with a 1970 with a 3.7 and I know someone with a 4.0 (same rigor) with a 1430. It’s not a really great way to measure the quality of your GPA. Especially when you can be a 2.0 GPA student, do 3 months of SAT Prep and get a 2000 and be a strong 4.0 from a low income neighborhood and get a 1600.
@CaliCash
Yeah, I mean I probably have a 3.7-3.8 GPA at my school(Dumb Hard) and I received a 2330 on the SAT…
But I’m barely top 15-20%? Not 10%… So yeah it all depends on the school… My argument was that it is just like a reasonable indicator but not the SOLE indicator because I do agree that some people slack really bad and OUT OF THE BLUE they receive a 2100 or something. These people have the capability but rather they are lazy probably. I don’t know…
What was the Highest SAT Score at your school BTW? 3:-O
Also, I got lucky on the SAT(I took the December one and it is actually easier than October)

@loveandmayhem How did you get rejected to Stanford? Why do you think you did? Your scores and such are awesome with the workload…
This thread started way back in 2006. It would be awesome if some of the original posters could come back and tell us how their college experience went, what degree they ended up graduating with and what they are currently doing, and give some advice on what they would do differently, e.g. attended a different college, took different classes in high school, did a different major etc.
