Can someone answer some common app letter of rec questions I have?

First, is it okay if I apply to more schools over winter break without telling my teacher/counselor? Someone told me that I need to tell them before this week (this is last week before break) so that the teachers can send the letter of rec to the additional schools I can apply to, but I'm not so sure that's right. But I also heard that certain schools have special evaluation forms, so maybe she is right?

Also, my spanish teacher won't be able to turn my letter in until the 2nd week of January (it's a long story...but let me just guarantee you this has nothing to do with me :P), so will this affect my application? And will she still be able to use the commonapp after the 1st or will she have to mail in the letters? And if she mails in the letters, how will she do those teacher evaluation things?

Thanks for everyone who answers

First question: have your teacher(s) already downloaded Teacher Evaluation forms into your CA account?

If the answer is yes, then you can attach and send those recs to ANY CA (Common App, not Calif.) school you apply to at any time.

Second question: are the schools you want to apply to CA schools?

If so, then they will use the CA Teacher Evaluation form. If not, then yes, they may have their own forms and you need to look at the college website to see how they want them submitted.

Bump!sfwgret

Oops, didn’t see this.

Yes, they’re all CA schools. So the CA won’t shut off after the 1st, right?

This year’s common app remains open through July. It should still be possible to submit them online.

No, it won’t shut down, there are CA schools with later deadlines, like Jan 15 for WUSTL.

However, if you have to submit by Jan 1, her form won’t be in the system, so it seems like it has to go hard copy, as I don’t think you can submit her form alone. I could be wrong and I’m not on the CA this year so I can’t check. I’d recommend you check on the CA subforum and see if someone knows for sure.

Many schools give some leeway for recs and other parts of the application, you might want to contact the schools and ask their policies.

If you do it hardcopy, you have to print out the Teacher Evaluation form and fill in the top part. Then give it to her to fill in the rest, except the signature, and make as many copies as needed. Then she signs all the copies, puts them in envelopes that you provide, and signs across the seal of the envelope. She can either return them to you to mail or you can address and provide postage when you give her the envelopes.

^
If it’s submitted electronically, the school should still be able to pull it if you let them know it’s been submitted. I’d talk to the individual admissions offices.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I don’t think she’ll be able to get the letter until the 15th…

I have a feeling things will work out fine, considering this isn’t my fault, but I can’t help but feel anxious.

Thanks for your help.

(The common app teacher evaluation form is awfully scary, by the way. )

@RedS: I’ll call asap. Thanks.
