Why is it that Syracuse University is continuously ranked so low? Not to say that being in the top 50 is poor, but in my opinion, SU is annually snubbed. SU has the most respected communications school (Newhouse) and the most respected social sciences school (Maxwell). Maxwell ranks higher than any Ivy! I recently read that SU has the number 17 overall arts and sciences program as well. The business school (Whitman, ranked in the high 30s) is also extremely underrated. It has a state of the art building/facilities and a remarkable faculty (one of my son's professors was a former senior officer of the world bank). How can a university that has two top programs and a very strong remaining curriclum barely break the top 50, if at all?

Because IMO "most respected" doesn't translate into rankings for the overall school...yea, I don't understand it either.....my D is a freshman in Newhouse and is working her butt off, even in Maxwell and A&S classes.....personally, she could care less about rankings; actually turned down at least 5 schools that she was admitted to that are ranked higher....

I love SU and everything that it has to offer. I fully agree that we have great programs throughout the entire campus but at the same time, I realize that I have a very limited knowledge about the programs at other schools. As much as I love SU and as much as I would love to see SU being ranked higher, I simply don't know much about the other schools to fully evaluate whether or not we belong in the rank that we're in.

Also, I believe that the rankings put a lot of emphasis on research so with the new LSC building, I'm hoping that we can see a bit of a boost on the ranks in the upcoming years.

Rankings do not only constitute "great" programs. Rankings comprises of alumni giving, emdowment, acceptance rate, quality of education, yield (how many students choose to enroll versus those who were actually accepted) and retention rate (the percentage of student who actually come back for their sophomore year). All of these things comes factor into a Univerity's rank. A lot of these factors stem a bit from how old a college is. If you look at Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia & Penn--just to name a few, they are all ranked up there and at the same time these are colleges that have been around for ages. Much older than SU. Now do I believe Syracuse should be ranked higher than where it is? Of Course! Being that I attend SU I might be a little biased. Syracuse needs to start by making themselves a little more selective. We've been having over-enrollment problems for the last couple of years. I feel they nee dto accept a little less students than they usually accept. But thats just a start.

ill tell u y...its cuz those ppl that rank have no idea what theyre talking about
