I am an in state student (who lives in Ann Arbor already) and would like to know if you think I have a good shot at UMICH.
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
GPA: W 4.3 UW 3.97
ACT: 33 (34, 31, 32, 34, 10 Writing)
Rank: 1 of 202
Residency: In State
Course Load: 9/9 AP courses taken at my high school and 4/4 honors courses, 4 years of Spanish
Extra Curriculars (my weakest section):
Varsity Tennis (4 years)
Backstage Crew Member (4 years, stage manager for 2 years, awards)
Language Club Member (3 years)
National Honors Society (2 years, very selective)
Working at a Pizza Place (2 years, shift-leader in charge of new-hire training, 30 hours a week 52 weeks)
Drama Club (4 year member)
I’m very worried that my extra curriculars are going to kill my application. Other than that, I feel as though I am a well qualified applicant.
Yes, you stand a good chance, especially because you’re in state. Your GPA, which they care about a lot, is nearly flawless and you have a very high ACT score. You’re EC are also pretty good. Colleges realized that a student can’t accomplish everything out side of class. After all, high school is you’re full time job. I’m almost in a similar position as you are, except out of state.
Class Rank:1
GPA:4.0(u), 5(w)
ACT: 32 (33,28,32,33)
With a good handful of ECs.
Although I can’t guaranty anything, I would be surprised if they rejected you. You’re entire profile is really strong. Good luck to the both of us
What is your intended major? For in state applicant with 3.97/33, LSA should be a low match and CoE would be a match. Although I know another in state student (also from Ann Arbor) got rejected from CoE with ACT 33 this year, your GPA and course rigor are both higher. It seems you are not attending any of the 3 main public schools at Ann Arbor since AAPS does not do class rank and they have more AP courses.
@billcsho I attend a school district about 15 miles away from Ann Arbor. I intend to study biology and will be applying the LSA as an early action applicant. I’m also looking at University of Florida, but I am not confident that I will be able to get in there.
You should be fine with UMich LSA. Why do you consider UF? Would it be much more expensive for your? UMich in state CoA is around $28k per year and they do meet the need for all in state students. So your cost would be much lower at UMich and it is a better school too.
@billcsho Yes it would be much cheaper to me to just go to Michigan. Florida is a pretty good school, and I don’t like living in Michigan very much. I much prefer the things that Florida (as a state) has to offer. Do you have any clue if I would have a decent chance at getting into UF?
Your stat is above the 75th percentile at U of Florida and the admission rate is around 39%, so you should have a good chance there. The CoA for OOS is $38k which is not too bad.
