Chance Me for UMich with low-ish GPA (and recommendations for other schools)

White/Upper-Middle Class, Public School. IN STATE!

My school has a good record with U of M, around 84% of applicants were accepted in 2015 and around 55% accepted last year.

GPA(UW/W): 3.62/3.84

ACT: 34 (36E,33M,33R,34S,8/12W) (I’m in the top 5 high scorers for my class)

Class Rank: 57/321 (U of M doesn’t consider class rank, but I thought I’d put it in anyways)

Course Rigor: Rigorous, senior schedule is very rigorous; 5/6 of my classes this year are AP or Honors courses (inc. AP Lit, AP Euro, AP CompGov/Micro, and AP Calc AB)

EC’s: Good, including hundreds of hours of volunteering at my synagogue and a bunch of leadership positions in a variety of fields.

LOR’s: Good, including one absolutely amazing letter from a professor at a local university. My counselor said that she would talk to admissions officers on my behalf, so I think her letter is very good.

Other: My mom worked for U of M (if it makes a difference), legacy, huge upward trend in GPA (3.7 soph to 4.3 junior year), my essay(s) is/are good too. I’ve demonstrated interest in UMich if that makes any difference.

So how does it look? I know my GPA’s low but I hope I can make up ground in other places. Thanks!!!

Also, if anyone can recommend any top-notch universities that I have a shot at, please let me know. Thanks!!!

Bump (I hate bumping but I thought I would anyways) (sorry)

I’m assuming Ann Arbor campus? I think that GPA is just to low to get into u mish Ann Arbor, your act score is great, just not good enough to make up for the GPA but being you have a huge upward trend you may be able to get in, also doesn’t matter how many kids got in from your school doesn’t really effect if you get in or not by all that much.

@Sterny16 Thanks for being honest, I needed a dose of reality I think. I’m just hoping that everything else besides my GPA being good makes up for my GPA not being good.

You can go to another U Mish school and transfer.

I think you’re counting me out too fast now that I think about it. People with 3.6’s get into Mich, especially with high test scores and in state

I think you’re a moderately competitive candidate for admission to UMich, Sterny16 is discounting you a little bit. Your GPA isn’t that low that it ruins your application.

UVA and NYU seem like “top-notch” universities you have a shot at

@silas1829 Thanks for the reply! I just hope that me being instate is helpful.

@uofmormsu I didn’t know you where In-state you are competitive for ann-arbor then.

@Sterny16 Oh okay, that makes me feel better. Thanks.

@UofMorMSU I think you are in man. I am very familiar with Umich.

OP, I think the first responses counted you out a little too quickly; You’re in-state with an awesome ACT and ok GPA. You have a good chance.

@sunshine232 @Arsenalfan245 Thanks for the (positive) opinions! You are really putting my mind at ease, I’ve been stressing soooo much about this app.
