Can someone check for appropriateness of a sentence?

The prompt:Choose an issue of importance to you—the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope—and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

I wrote about American public school education as having a low standards, which, now that some friends have pointed out to me, seems to be a touchy subject in general. But specifically, in my essay, I wrote an interesting sentence:

Although I do not share with my parents’ complete dedication of education (to be honest, I have yet to meet a child who genuinely loves to learn), I remained fortunate to have parents who recognized the importance of education and instilled the values of hard work and the importance of knowledge into my head.

Would the sentence look bad and insulting considering I'm using the essay to apply to UT honors, full of people who love to learn?

That’s a very weird thing to say in any college essay, let alone one for an honors proram. If you honestly don’t believe anyone loves to learn, why are you applying to an honors program?
