I applied to Penn State in early October and put down UP for both of the campus choices on the application. I did not however, agree to do the summer session on my application but I am thinking about calling admissions to have that changed, any thoughts? If anyone has any information or commentary about the summer session it would be awesome if you could reply. Thanks!

Summer session runs 2 8-wk sessions: May/late June, July/August. Summer freshman can choose to participate in LEAP, an orientation program where the emphasis is on getting a “head start” on knowing campus and each other. Freshmen typically take English, Speech, or Writing gen eds and/or a freshman seminar course from their college (or DUS) that’s designed to introduce you to the choices within the college before you actually are taking classes there. LEAP is very highly regarded and highly recommended, and usually starts in the July/August session. (Called 2nd summer, here)

Summer session is attended by locals, upperclassmen with a desire to catch up, retake, or take a single class in a more concentrated “dose”. You can stay in your dorm room, or LEAP freshmen can stay in a dorm and then will be moved to their permanent assignment in August. Summer session is also typically attended by students who might stay to work over the summer, and figure they might as well take a class, too. Campus is by no means deserted, but certainly it’s more relaxed and a smaller bunch. If you are here in the summer, you can also take in ArtsFest, a HUGE art festival held in July for 4 days that attracts thousands of people, plus the Fourth Fest fireworks, some of the best in the country. There’s also baseball at Medlar Field, and there’s an outdoors-oriented LEAP style program called…drawing a blank. Orion! They go backpacking, etc. with freshmen.

Other people will know more, and correct what I am mis-remembering. Hope it helps

I dont know much about the summer session but I have a friend who went to penn state for the summer session this past year as a freshman. She seemed to love it, you basically get to move in early and take classes for credit before everyone is moved in. I realize that you didnt elect to do summer session but it is always a possibility that if your credentials were the best but they still thought you were good enough they will give you summer session at UP rather than giving you an alternative campus for the fall.

I’ve already been admitted as an engineering major.

Can I take calc1 over the summer so I have a head start on my major and go right into calc2 as the regular semester begins?

If I can when do I have to let them know that I want to do this?

Many colleges do your scheduling sessions the same day you do FTCAP testing. As far as calc, remember that summer session is compressed – you are basically taking an entire semester’s worth of content in a much shorter time. It will just depend whether you can find an open session, or if it’s offered. The summer master schedule of classes usually opens around spring break, and you could check then.

hey guys, I recently applied to Penn State undergrad and upon checking my “mypennstate” account yesterday, I noticed that my picture had changed to the Nittany Lion with a box below it explaining the 2+2 program and how all the other campuses are great. This scared me because from what I’ve read on this site, the picture change to the Nittany Lion seems to mean you’ve either been deferred or denied and I was wondering if there was anyone who has experienced otherwise and if not, what would be the major with the lowest stats or highest admissions to get into UP being that it doesn’t matter at first what major i get into, I will obviously eventually transfer into my intended one (keep in mind that I applied DUS on my app), thanks!
