Assignment: What must we do to truly understand ourselves? In an essay, support your position by discussing an example (or examples) from literature, the arts, science and technology, history, current events, or your own experience or observation.

Understanding ourselves is a complex process that everyone strives to achieve. This process does not happen overnight, it is rather a life- long accomplishment where pieces of your true self is slowly collected and finally reveals the inner you. Through each hardship, challenge and with the assistance of others, you are one more step closer to collecting all the puzzle pieces that make up who you are.

When I was in middle school, I had a group of close friends whom I looked forward to seeing everyday, yet we still quarrel on behalf of the great contrast of our personality. One of my friends was indolent, the other always nonchalant and another vigorous. We’ve all labeled ourselves yet I failed to see how ‘industrious; is me. With every altercation and hardship with my group of friends, I slowly began to see how I was diligent. I realized that it is easy for others to see your inner self yet we often fool ourselves and refuse to accept our weaknesses and negative traits which is what inhibit us to truly understand ourselves. An altercation of my lack of music taste allowed me to realize that because I’m always working hard; I never had the time to catch up with the latest trends. I finally accepted ‘diligence’ as both strength and weakness of myself and further understood my personality.

Another great example of discovering yourself through hardships is Genghis Khan. Genghis, the universal leader of the Mongols struggled through hardships and challenges to discover his true self- an intrepid leader. Through challenges such as blackmailing a sentry into letting Genghis escape an enemy’s camp and killing Genghis’ own brother over a fish, Genghis Khan finally understood himself. He accepted that he does not rely on others and only his own sense. He accepted that he might have been cold- hearted when killing his own brother. Genghis Khan realized his fate- a great leader.

Through the assistance of others, altercations and overcoming hardships, one can slowly understand the labels of personality others give him/her and grasp the understanding of his/ her true self. Understanding yourself is a vital accomplishment that helps you realize your destiny, career and fate.
