So here's the deal: I'm graduating from high school, 2010, but deferring a year from college to work and travel. Can I take Advanced Placement tests in the interim period, during my gap year? I want to graduate in 3 1/2 years, not 4.

I would check with your HS counseling office and ask them.

You’ll have no trouble finding a school that will let you take AP tests (remember, though, they’re only offered once a year), but some colleges only grant credit for AP tests taken prior to high school graduation. Thus, you should ask the college involved.

I do not think you can take AP exams after you have graduated high school.

Your other option is CLEP exams. Some colleges allow you to earn credits for courses by taking CLEP exams.

Anyone who is willing to shell out the money, and show up on exam day, can take the AP exams. A number of adults who write about education issues have done just this.

Whether or not the college/university in question will give you credit/placement for that exam is an entirely different story. You should verify that you will be given credit/placement for a given score before you spend your money on a “late” AP exam.
