I am a first year college student at a junior college. For my first semester I am in danger of getting a C in my chemistry class. Since I need this class for my major preparation before transfer, should I drop the class since I know I'm going to get a C and get a Withdrawal or should I stay in the class and recieve a D or an F and do an academic renewal? Either way I have to repeat the class because I heard that you can't get a C in any of your major preparatory classes when transferring to a UC and I really want to go to Cal or UCLA. What should I do? And is it true that I can't transfer with a C?

First thing tomorrow go talk to the transfer counselors at your junior college. They will have the up-to-date information for you.

Is it also true that if I recieve a W that it won’t do anything to GPA and that a D or a F would? Also I heard that the W will be permanent on your transcript, but with academic renewal I can erase the D or F. But I will most definitely take your advice to go to a counselor. Thanks for the advice.

The academic renewal thing depends. Some schools (like USC) require that you report all version of the grade, not just the renewed grade. I think it is the general consensus here that a few W’s won’t hurt you at a UC, but since it is a major prep course I think talking to a counselor would be your best bet.

if I remember correctly, 2 years must have elapsed before one can petition for academic renewal. If you plan on following the “regular” trajectory, you will be applying in one year. If you plan on staying longer than 2 years at CC then you can apply for academic renewal.

I would take the W if you are really committed on going to Cal and UCLA. I got a W my first semester of college and I was accepted into Berkeley and UCLA. It won’t be a surprise to them that you messed up your first semester but make sure to kill Chem when you retake it. Don’t under any circumstance opt for a D or F, try to get the C but if that doesn’t seem possible when the “W” deadline comes up…drop it with a W.

Best of luck

Academic renewal rules vary from school to school. Not all require two years to have passed since the sub-par grades. Many just require a certain amount of units.

Marie14: If you’re interested in academic renewal, look up your school’s policy. Not all counselors or those working in admissions are fully aware of what the policy states especially if it was recently revised. It is best to inform yourself as best you can before you begin the process or even consider to begin the process.

Thanks everybody! I will definitely talk to a counselor tomorrow!

I am in almost the same situation as Marie. I am a freshman and I am in an earth science class which is not a pre-req for my major -Communications. Currently, I have a C (72%) in the class and I am positive I can maintain the C, but the possibility of getting a B is slim- I would need to get low 90s on the next test, and final and for the past tests I barely passed. I too want to go to UCLA. I talked to my counselor and transfer center counselor and they recommended I stay in the class and keep my “W” record clean and that the colleges will consider it is during a short span (this class is winter intersession, and that this class is unrelated to my major). However, this C will bring down my 3.8 GPA to a 3.5.
What should I do- 1) go with a W or 2) stay in the class and receive a low grade?
ADVICE please!

My other option was to fail the course, and opt for academic renewal.
The last day to drop is tomorrow and I have no clue what to do.

Drop and retake or ask your teacher if it would be possible that if you received a C to just give you an F so you can retake. Communications is one of the most impacted majors at UCLA and a gpa dive like that will hurt the lowest i would say you can get in any class is a B and can have 2 B’s max on your transcript for a good shot at UCLA Communications

^drop and get a W. no way u will get into ucla’s comm program with a 3.5 gpa. Ws dont really matter unless u have an excessive amount. it might hurt u when applying to grad school, but not for undergrad

i agree just drop and take the W, it wont hurt this one time.

Is it past your deadline to change to a P/NP instead of a letter grade? If not you can opt to change it so that you still get the credit & it won’t effect your GPA. That’s what I did w/ one of my science classes before transferring to Cal. I wanted to take the pressure off due to a course overload that semester so I switched it to P/NP. I actually did it after the deadline by petitioning. Since it’s not your major pre-req you should be fine.

I would never chose to get a D or F over a W. I had a few W’s & it did no hurt my chances at any school in the past. You also have to consider how taking a D or F can effect you later if you decide to go to grad school (especially law school) even w/ academic renewal

the not being able to transfer with a C is untrue. Many ppl transfer with a C

Get the ‘W’
