Hi guys,

Not far. This question has been asked fairly often. Search the forum.

According to D, it’s a 20-25 minute walk to Old Campus. Some of it is through an ok-but-not-great neighborhood.

It’s a 20 minute walk to Central Campus, through mixed residential and commercial areas (though you can make the first half of the trip entirely through downtown if you wish). It certainly isn’t a journey one should embark on at night, but during the day you should be perfectly safe.

Agreed that it’s fine during the day, except for some shabby looking places. But, if you have luggage or anything of that sort, it might be an inconvenience. New Haven streets are horrendous to navigate and to just walk, and doing that with luggage might be worse (especially in the summer).

What are some other ways to get to the campus from the Greyhound station? I will have luggage.

You can take a taxi, but that costs about $10. There is also the city bus, which costs $1.25 (exact amount necessary). It’s the J line.

The greyhound station is the same as the train station, right? I’ve walked from there a number of times during the day and it’s been fine. i think it is a little over a mile if i remember correctly. But there is also the yale shuttle. I’ve only taken it from there at night. The night shuttle starts at 6 and the blue line goes there and you say where on main campus you want to be dropped off. During the day, I believe the red line stops there and you can get off somewhere on main campus-- i know it stops at phelps gate but that may be after it does its complete loop. you can check out the shuttle maps on yale.edu/transit

I’ve walked to the train station twice with a suitcase and backpack, and neither time was hassled by the condition of the streets.

Take a taxi if you have luggage. I know money is an issue but seriously, take a taxi.

I often wish I had been less frugal when I was young and poor.

Ah, I’d love to be a little less frugal but money doesn’t allow. Why take a taxi if the bus is only $1.25? More money to spend elsewhere. Also, I’ve never taken a taxi. And I’ve seen that movie THE BONE COLLECTOR.

Well, I know you probably don’t want to take a taxi, but I do have to vouch for the New Haven taxi men, who are not only not psychopathic bone collectors but are actually very nice. I took my first taxi ride ever from Yale to the train station. It was $7 and the guy helped me with all my luggage and pointed out interesting buildings as we drove.

Well, that actually does make me feel better.

It’s wjb’s son. There’s no reason not to take the Yale shuttle’s Red line. It’s free, easy, and will take you to Phelps, among other places. yale.transloc.com

Can I use the Yale shuttle without a Yale ID?

^^ Yes, you can.

^^ technically, no; in practice, yes. They never check.

But seriously, do not walk alone from the Greyhound station even around dawn/dusk. In fact, even in broad daylight, part of that area is sketchy. A good rule of thumb: under no circumstances go south of George St. after dark, by yourself.

yes do not walk to the train station at night. take the shuttle, taxi, or bus. i know someone who was robbed near the train station two nights ago. First time i’ve heard of an undergrad getting robbed (usually only happens far from central campus).
