Canadians.

lol and this goes to Old Scona > Western > Churchill ?-_-? lol I don't wanna offend anyone.

Yeah except Western is better than Old Scona (more people = more clubs, teams, programs, etc), not to mention that we are downtown (and have good shopping).

Therefore Western > other schools lol. Yeah, I'm a bit biased.

Truthfully the two are hard to compare... small private IB school vs. large public school with tons of different options... it's like apples and oranges.

objections:
1) we are not a private school, we are public. It's just that our academic reputation has become so well-known that people mistake it as a private university prep school.
2) we are right by the second busiest avenue in Edmonton and really close to downtown.
3) less people = everyone knows everyone, its like a family. (less people = each person has more contribution to the school.) Although i agree that our teams aren't the greatest, our programs are extraordinary. We offer A LOT of courses, and we can practically take almost as much as we want because our time tables are VERY flexible. I am taking 9 IB courses and 3 options. (I can take 2 more if I want to, but I decided to do some other stuff rather than more courses; but ALL the courses that I want are at this school, so I don't think there is a big problem with our program).
4) Old Scona was named the top academic public school in Canada by McLean's, not to mention its 7th consecutive number 1 spot in Alberta academically.
5) lol your description of "small private IB school" is false and misleading. As I mentioned above, we are public, and our size has been increasing year by year. AND we do also have a lot of options, which you don't seem to be aware of.

I am not gonna state which school's better cuz obviously you will disagree. But i just wanted to clarify your misconception about Old Scona, probably caused by your school's inferiority complex due to its failure to capture number 1 spot for the last several years.

lol everyone on CC wants their school to be better than others, don't they? =)

Can anyone please answer my question 6 posts up ^ :(

Are you referring to the National Merit Scholarship? If so, that is only open to Americans. Could you please clarify your question?

The following websites have databases full of scholarships open to Canadians.
www.studentawards.com/
www.scholarshipscanada.com/
You can find many more by searching on Google

Oh sorry I was badly mistaken; my question was like 9 or 10 posts up -_-
and yes i meant the NMSQT (i think thats what its called). I know THAT one is only for the americans, but i was wondering if you can receive other scholarships if your PSAT score is from the sophomore year? Because i'm goign in to the junior grade this fall and not ready for it yet. :S

cowgirl: ur frd's sister... tobyn?

Hey guys... does anyone know if there's a forum like this for canadian colleges/universities or just for canadians?

There's a forum for McGill University and the University of Toronto under "Alphabetic Universities," but that's it.

ragingmen- yes it was tobyn's sister! :)

coolness_rookie -
Sorry if I was mistaken about your school... I have a friend who goes there and that was the impression he gave me when he was talking about it (and yeah, he did say it was an elitist prepratory-type school. no offense on the elitist bit but he is the kind of guy who is proud of that kind of thing... so yes, I did think it was private).

Also, you might be growing, but according to the Fraser Institue report (2005), there are 97 grade 12s. At Western there are 606 of us. At my school and probably at yours, there are people who run the school clubs, there are athletes, musicians, etc as well as people who do nothing. However, I know that some of my classmates put so much into the school that they might as well live there. Just because there are more of us doesn't mean that those of us who are involved don't contribute a whole lot. Also less people doesn't necessarily mean a better school community. Did you know that we raised $55 000 to purchase special cancer treatment equipment for the new chlidren's hospital? Having nearly the entire school voluntarily (it was during lunch - they could have left) pack into the gym to support 45 kids shaving their heads requires community.

Oh, and not enough Western kids have even heard of Old Scona for us to actually have an inferiority complex. We're still the #1 public school in Calgary ;)

^^

and i hate it when ppl pick western over churchill even tho they are geographically designated to go to churchill...

and this is probably blasphemy, but the reason why churchill is worst off than western academically, is cause like 1/4 of the school is asians... not smart ones, but rich ones that live in the northwest and don't give a crap about anything.

btw, cowgirl, are your counselors very informed about US universities?

1/4 of Western is made up of rich spoiled caucasians who live in Mount Royal and also don't give a crap about anything.

Regarding Western and Old Scona, in my opinion the two schools are not analogous. My understanding is Old Scona is a academically focused school, and because of the small population of the school, I trust there's a large percentage of students work hard for their marks. At western, we have over 600 people in each grade, some focuses only on academics, others on athletics, clubs, and other activities.

My school is like a huge mosaic, everybody is a unique piece to the puzzle, therefore the rankings are not reliable in this case as it only takes in the academic aspect of the schools.

nevertheless, my neighbour is going to western, when all common sense in the world dictates that he should be going to churchill.

its the intracity braindrain

If you don't mind me asking is your neighbour Chinese? If he/she is, it might be coercion.

wow so many people from edmonton

im just from boring toronto, a guy got into harvard last year from our school, but he was academic superstar,

if he didn't get in, i would of been disappointed

well, i can't say much about my public school, it's got a few bright people
like two IMO who both qualified for the IPhO, and other assortments

the rest is a slum

nah, his indian. which is really the same as a chinese in this situation.

Hey, rakeon what school are you from? Are you from DMCI?

yep, im from dmci. ARE YOU? lol

wow this is turning into the canadian connections thread
