ya cause ur going to penn :)

WOOT!

I'm from BC Vancouver.

I know that every year, about 80-100 kids apply to the top-tier schools from BC alone. And only about...10-15 get in. Sigh. Tha'ts not bad though eh.

Representing Vancouver, BC here.

I don't understand it when high-achieving Canadian kids opt to go to mid-level U.S. schools like USC when they can save tens of thousands of dollars and go to Queens, UT, UBC, SFX, or McGill. Unless you get into the Ivy League schools or the top 5 LACs, what's the use in paying all that money to go the U.S.? Some Canadians have the false notion that everything in the U.S. is better (somebody once told me how hard it was to get to Oregon State University), when there are perfectly good schools right here at home. Should I get rejected from my U.S. choices, I won't be the least bit disappointed in going to Queens, which is my top Canadian choice.

I will only apply to US unis above UT(29th?) on both the Times(THES) or the Shanghai list.
Sorry Brown,97th ranking?????

I dont know. I dont really think UBC or UT is "IT" for me. That's why I'm wanting to head down south. Besides, I don't know how great the Conservatives are gonna be once they supposedly take over this year. Goodness. Anyway.

Which school are you from nba?

I think that listing from Shanghai is a not all together accurate. Besides, what qualifies a university to be on the "top 20" anyway?

Harvard has a great sounding name, but in a recent study, it was shown that Harvard students are one of THE most unhappy students (as compared to students from 40 other top-notch colleges).

Besides, Brown being 97th..uh...that's just unlikely. The acceptance rate for Brown is SO much lower than that of U of T. Besides, UT entrance is based mostlly on academics. The broad-based application adds greater verve to the college campus, creating, what I consider, a more sound and favorable environment for learning.

its ranked on graduate programs.................which u of t kills brown at

That list emphasizes research, not undergrad education.

is it a coincidence that both ranked Brown lowerMUCH LOWER,then?????????

Brown focuses heavily on the undergrad side of college education, so no, it's not a coincidence, it's a fact: Brown sucks at research when compared to Harvard or Stanford. However, since we're only undergrads at the moment, those rankings should mean nothing to us.

brown undergrad is hype, much better undergrad than say ut

For a torontonian to apply to 29 universities worldwide(UT and above,IE INCLUDING bEIJING tokyo National U of Singapore. Oxbridge) plus local ones seems alot for now.
My parents would not pay for any more, particularly to ones below ut

no sht, I think applying to 8 is too much.. where do you find teachers who would write recommendations for 20+ universities??

I'm not a Canadian (though am applyin' to 4 Ontario uni's), but generally teachers write one rec, print it how many copies you need and sign them. What I've heard some complain about is the constant ticking of boxes for "top 10%" or "One of the best of career" and that range stuff. :S

It's my GC that complains about applyin' to excessive universities because of transcripts and paper and ink. embarrassed Heh.

wow 29 universities,

may i ask, what's the point of applying to that many? i don't see how it gives you any advantage other than knowing you applied there

29 universities? Wow, I'm sure your list was really well thought-out...

blissful angst -
"Besides, I don't know how great the Conservatives are gonna be once they supposedly take over this year. Goodness."

why would you then choose to move to the States?!?!? george bush is MUCH more conservative than steven harper, i absolutely detest american politics.... one of the reasons i wasn't going to apply to the south is because i'm not sure i could handle having to live around so many people that support bush.

and then i realized, lame rationalization. i'm always going to be around people i disagree with, avoiding challenging conversations and conflicting viewpoints is only asking to be ignorant. but i digress.
regardless of politics, i don't know if i should even bother applying to the US. i wrote a lengthy thread a little bit ago explaining everything, please visit it and comment if you have the chance.

"[harper] will put a smile on George W. Bush's face"

liberal attack ad

Although I do support the Liberals overall, some of their ads make them look desperate in my opinion...

The way things are going right now, it looks like there's a good chance of a Conservative minority, or even majority.

Blueberry:

Harper is a chauvinistic-ridiculous-trekkie. Yah, He's a trekkie. I heard on the news this morning. Anyway.

I'm applying to the states for a variety of reasons. It seems like with the upcoming election, Canada may be losing its identity soon. For example, recently, in Vancouver, we've just started a "legal injection site" project - which is basically a factor where clean, sterile needles are provided for people who really really really are addicted to drugs. I know that people may be appalled by this. However, this system is implemented to reduce the transfer of HIV, and since it started, the drug scene in Vancouver has greatly ebbed.

Nonetheless, Harper believes that all those who relate themselves with drugs should be imprisoned. Which means extra funding is needed to build this institutions. I really do not think prison is anyway to heal someone's addiction. Harper has also displayed signs of sexism, and his idea to legalize guns simply erases the identity of Canada.

I want to go to the states because I want the best education possible, to be surrounded in a new environment with an eclectic mix of students, and to be humbled by all the geniuses around me. I'm also applying just for fun. I know it's a lot of work...but in retrospect, it's been one darn diddly awesome ride.
