Candiate Kits for class of 2013

When do the Candidate kits for class of 2013 come out with the medical infornmation, reccomendations and everything…and does the applicant have to be competitive to be considered to get the kit…or is it upon the review of the application…thank you

I believe the Candidate Kit opened up for us online right after Summer Seminar... so late June? And I'm pretty sure that you do have to be competitive in order to start the application.

candidate kits are mid-late june, maybe early july. you'll get a link to your online app, which is where you'll be turnin in all your stuff.. you'll get a DoDMERB postcard telling you to call a number w/in a certain number of days and schedule an appointment. go ahead and start practicing for the CFA and contacting your congressmen/senators... earlier is nearly always better unless there's gonna be a drastic improvement in something (test scores, cfa, etc)

2013???? O.o

Yes, G4C, you're old.

(That was a joke. :D)

Does anyone know how many recommendations are needed? Does one of them have to be from like a math or science teacher and a coach or something? Also, can anyone tell us C/o 2013 hopefuls what else to expect in the candidate kit (besides med. stuff)....are there essays we have to write ect. I'm just trying to get myself together before AP's, finals SATs and other tedious tests come around. Thanks for all of your help!!! :-D

Wow...this was 3 years ago for me. Let's see what I remember.

I'm pretty sure that there are about 3 teacher recommendations, and I'm pretty sure one of them has to be a science/math teacher and the other a PE teacher/coach, while the third is your option. (I could be wrong or this could have changed. so I apologize if this is incorrect).

From what I remember there are also a few essays (general topics). Nothing that can't be done with a couple days of thought and proof-reading.

I believe it is still that way. Make sure to choose the teachers carefully as they can play a big role in first impressions by the Academy.

They don't by any chance randomly call or ask for reccomendations from random teachers do they?

No, they don't do that kind of thing. Just be sure to ask for them way in advance and make a phony date before the real one since some teachers like to cut it close, and you don't want to put your appointment on the line.

I was under the impression that one had to be english, one math and the third was your option. Also, if you have your teacher's e-mail and you give them a heads up now, some will do it over the summer so you don't have to worry about it later. All of mine were pretty good about that.

check out the 2012 candidate information packet for a good idea of what to expect.

the "candidate kit" is a postcard telling you to go to the website and there's where you'll have access to all your forms, 3 essays, 3 teacher recommendations (math, english, and your option). go ahead and get their email addresses if you can. later on in early july or so you'll get a postcard from DoDMERB to call a certain number w/in so many days to set up your appointment. you'll have to get transcripts to send in, test scores, parent information, etc. the essays arent difficult, i did them on a sunday afternoon. they give you 3, you pick between two and one is optional, so you write 2. there're previous posts/threads on this if you wanna look them up. if you're dedicated, you can get it done as soon as you want to. mine was done in october, i think christcorp's son had his done before august. it depends on how much time you have in the summer and how dedicated you are. just do it! dont get behind and always work for your CFA, it's not hard at all even if you're in average shape. aim for above the averages!

edit: dont forget to be contacting your congressmen/senators too! write them letters. look them up on the internet, their websites usually have what they require you to do. call the offices.. anything. but DONT forget about this part

All great advice! For the essays (I'm sure they change each year) are they simple as in "Why do you want to attend the AFA" type of essays? Also, do the recommendations have to be submitted online?(I think I read somewhere that some colleges were starting to do this). Would anyone suggest using senior year teachers for the recs.? I get along well with my teachers this year but I already know my teachers for next year and I think that they might be able to write good, if not better, reccomendations.

The letter of recommendation must be submitted online. All you will do is submit your teachers email address and then the AFA will send them the form. It must be completed by your junior or senior teachers.

My English teacher refuses to write recommendation forms, does anyone know how strict the academy is on having an English teacher recommendation?

You have to have the ones they request...if that English teacher won't go to another one that you have had during your hs career. Or wait until the fall for your sr yr. Even if you finished your kit by Aug., the boards do not start meeting until Oct/Nov for early admit. Most MOC's do not hand out noms until Nov., if you are eligible for a Pres., you can get a nom earlier. The AFA doesn't hand out LOA's like candy, I believe that the number is only about 20%. The majority are given appts. in Mar. Thus, again you don't have to have your paperwork done until Mar, giving long enough leeway for your sr teacher to write one.

In NC., the Senators did not give noms until Dec and January. Our Congressman did not announce noms until then also, but other cong., gave out in Nov. Dec

Good luck, don't worry you have time to get one
