Candidate Visitation Weekend

That is correct according to the letter. Thursday, 6p.m. to 11:00a.m. Sat.

That is correct per my son who is a plebe at USNA. He said if you are from NAPS it is from Wednesday to SUnday. He is currently hosting a young man from NAPS who arrived at 5:00 tonight and is leaving Sunday at 11:00a.m.

curious in ca,

Also, does anybody know if they arrange for you to be picked up at the airport or do you need to get your own transportation?

You are required to furnish your own transportation. To get information regarding shuttle service to Annapolis, please call the Super Shuttle at 800.258.3826 or visit their web site or Crofton Coach at 410.451.3030. The shuttles normally leave BWI hourly with stops in Annapolis at most local hotels and Gate One at the academy.

I think our regional director said candidates going to CVW would also receive a letter regarding shuttle info.

F.Y.I, I just got a letter with a schedule change, the new times is from Thursday at 1800 (same as before) until 0830 Saturday morning (due to the Brigade of Midshipman leaving for the Notre Dame vs. Navy game.

So that answers that question / earlier post! Son Mike had been concerned that everyone else seemed to be getting thier invites weeks ago, but his just arrived (10/20 date on letter, offering (6) different weekends thru the winter and spring Nov thru April). Anyone else signing up for the Jan 25-27 weekend? Especially from NJ area?

I am signed up for that weekend, my names Matt I am from maryland

DKnightfam: My son just got his letter today too and the January weekend works well in between wrestling season so we are hoping there are still spaces to attend during the 'dark ages' (is that the correct term??)

We originate from NJ (thus my logon) but call Atlanta home these days. Union county - and you???

Wonder why some were sent later than others? Do you have to be qualified before you are invited? My son's BGO told him he was 'qualified' by the board but he has not received a letter. Either way, my son is ecstatic. So much so that he said if he can't go in January and ends up having to go in April, he's 'just going to stay there until I-day!'

The Dark Ages? What's that?

Not sure - I heard someone refer to January and February in Annapolis as something like that - dreary and cold maybe??? I thought someone would know! Maybe that's not the right terminology but it was 'dark' something.

I found the definition.....

The Dark Ages

As the Mids return from Christmas Leave, they must settle in for the long, cold and depressing months ahead. Traditionally, the months of January through March's Spring Break represent the Dark Ages. This is a time of shortened daylight, intense studies and little or no encouragement.

LOL sorry, I was being sarcastic (on purpose). The "Dark Ages" is really what each individual makes of it. It is just as superstition/psychological barrier that mids use as an excuse for being cranky and getting bad grades.

I have never experienced the "Dark Ages"...well, maybe if you consider the cold weather, I have...as I come from a warm climate. Though, I never use the "Dark Ages" as an excuse for poor performance or crankiness.

is there something in place that allows a candidate to go by themselves? i.e. transportation to and from the airport?

br2011,

Check out post #63.

though my wife grew up in Saddle Brook, so we know your area....

Good luck to your son!

I got a candidate visitation invite letter yesterday, and I think I'm going to go on November 16-18 if there is still room. That saturday is the Navy vs. Temple game, so I'll probably just stay on the yard when my dad comes, and we'll go watch the game. I'm really excited to go live in Bancroft for the second time this year! Summer seminar was awesome, but it will be neat seeing the real academic life of a plebe. I can't wait!

PS- my dad says the dark ages are a nickname for january-february because its midterms, and its cold

There hasn't been any discussion for a while on this topic. My son is going 13 Nov 2008. Any new thoughts about the meaning of being invited? What do candidates do during study hall hours? My son will bring homework and reading....anything else he should plan for?

nothing more than what has been already said by several posters. Do not read more into this than what is intended- an opportunity for your candidate to view the academy from the perspective of a Mid- in class, in Bancroft, in Kings Hall, etc. Nothing more, nothing less. Your candidate should come with an open mind, attitude parked at the gate, and ready to ask questions- this is the opportunity. The Plebe assigned to drag your candidate will be asked to fill out an evaluation after the visit- a wise candidate will keep that in mind.

There are no "Study hall hours" per say....
What the Mids have is non-class time- where "most" are either doing the day's work, catching up on work, getting help with work, or moving ahead with work-
they have manditory "study hours" in the evening - which means time set aside to do the above- and for "many," there is too little of it to get everything done that needs getting done.

Bringing HW and reading is ok- but frankly, I would be using the time to speak to other mids in the company area and getting as many perspectives as possible on which to base one's decision.

As for other things to plan for-
bathing suit and running shoes, a pair of gym shorts and tee- (just in case that is the schedule your plebe has)- "neat" clothes for classes (The Mids all wear shirts and ties)- personally, I would leave the jeans and sneakers at home (running shoes the exception) and wear kahki's, a button down shirt and a tie- (tie optional)- but a collared shirt for sure, tucked in and with a belt. "Neat" and "conservative" should be the guiding principle.
Good attitude a must.

OK 2010, CVW's must translate to the Academy's interest in a person. Is that interest strong? How many in total get an invite to CVW??? How does a person go from a prospect to an appointment?

Does anyone know what happens if both sessions I was assigned to are already full?

Will there be another letter sent out for spring CVW's?
