Maybe it's okay to brag at USNA, but I have been informed by parents of USMA upperclassmen that bragging about your cadet (or your cadet bragging about him/herself) is a no-no.

I dont fault them for the press release but some of what was said there and on newcadet.com should have been reserved for private conversations and not broadcast to the public. Anyone accepted to a service academy should be proud of it but a little humility wouldnt hurt. The best way to show your enthusiasm is to do well at Beast give it your all, help your classmates, and dont quit. Actions speak louder than words.

No one needs to hide under the radar but why ask for extra attention by calling cadre West Point geeks. He doesnt even know if he can make it through the summer and he is saying things like that seems to me that he is awfully full of himself.

Honestly, I haven't seen any bragging, just a lot of exuberance and positive energy. Maybe, rightfully so, he is slightly angry that a bunch of parents are taking second hand once removed information, abeted by plebes there now, and making a mountain out of a molehill.

Where is he bragging?

Don't stick everyone's head in a hole for them. It would be a mighty dull place. I'm betting on Milty.

I read an application for a successful WP candidate this year. He mentioned in his essay that his ultimate goal was to be President of the US. Think the admissions dept will sift through applications and tag those who are not quite as humble as they would like?? Somehow I doubt it.

It takes a confident person to lead troops into battle. The job of WP is to take those confident cadets and mold them such that they are not a harm to themselves and others. Send your head in the sand candidates somewhere else. They don't belong in our military.

I subscribe to google news alerts for West Point and a number of these "press releases" have shown up in my mailbox. Mostly kids in small town and articles in small town newspapers.
They and their communities are proud, all they really know though is that West Point is hard to get into. Think about this - what to the folks in Yuma AZ know about West Point? Maybe they know they play in the Army/Navy game.
Most incoming new cadets are not on this forum - they haven't been exposed to military life and have maybe made one visit to West Point.
They have been fed enthusiasm throught this process by their MALO, congressman, parents and teachers.
Naturally they are excited.

It is absurd that this kid is being dragged and quartered before R-Day because his dad called the local paper. None of you would know if it wasn't for the internet. So what if the reporter asked him what his life goals are?
He really doesn't or didn't know any better.
And he got threats for that? Seems a little absurd to me.

Wait until they get to R-Day - then go at them.

BTW - all you parents who have "warned" your kids and kids who have been "warned" - don't worry. You won't be left out. The cadre WILL find something to scream at you about.

Geez - I'm thinking that the profile, photos and posts attributed to this CC at newcadet could easily be fakes.

I'm also thinking that it's best for cadre of 2012 to simply adhere to the USMA mission statement in determining how to train all of the CC's and NC's.

Hey parents and cadet candidates do what you want. You dont have to listen to the actual cadets on the forum what do they know, they have only been through it.

ok lets all just settle down......many people on here are cadets, are related to cadets, used to be cadets, so i'm not sure how we missed this, but cadets have quite a bit of free time. With this time, they rapell out of windows to turn papers in, they throw water baloons off of roofs and they do all sorts of other stupid/funny/generally entertaining things. They also spend an inordinate amount of time online and on email, thus when one person somehow got this press release, they probably found it entertaining and emailed it to a few buddys or a team, and those people did the same, and so on and now everyone knows about good ol milty the third. Generally, cadets dont go out saying, "lets go find some kids coming in next year who said something dumb in a paper", cus I'm sure there are plenty of other press releases in which people said stuff just like milton.

As far as those who say that this article is going to dictate how well milty will do at the academy, please stop. I've got a really tough time believing that his answers to a few questions from a reporter are going to have any bearing on his sucess or lack therof as a cadet and hopefully officer. He will act the way he will act and he will probably make it through beast because truthfully, its not very hard to do, and once the third day rolls around, the cadre will have plenty of reasons to yell at everyone else too.
Sorry for the long post, i generally dont comment, i just feel its necessary to stop the madness sometimes.

also, triggs, cmon man, do you really think that this kid, who is supposedly bright enough to get into west point would be stupid enough to make a profile on a website blatantly full of cadets and talk crap?

I suppose some of you may question my 'dog in this fight'. Allow me to say that I have seen probably 40 or so young men and women off to the SAs over the past 10 yrs or so. Milton's Yuma newspaper article is typical of the candidate who will do well. Excited, exuberant, he has the world by the horns. He is an optimist. He doesn't need a bunch of naysayers telling him that things will be tough. He knows it. He will take the shock of R-Day in stride.

There is a time for exuberance and a time for humility. Now is the time for exuberance. The academy will temper that with humility. One does not need to be a member of the WP 'family' to know that it is a lot easier to temper enthusiasm than it is to create it.

Attitude is everything. Allow him to have his well deserved time in the sun. Small town America deserves it. That press release, in itself, was probably worth three or four applications next year. Who knows, one of them may be President of the US. It really does my heart well to know that there are still young men and women interested in this.

This kid seems similar to that kid thats a plebe here now that had his own website about how he was going to be the president. The school made him take it down because it was so rediculous and now the url is blocked by websense. My friend went on a B&G trip with him and saw this plebe handing out his business card to the people that spoke to them (oh sweet let me put this in my rolodex!) Pretty big tool. I think this is more of the impression everyone is getting about this new kid coming in. If someone really wants to become the President good for them, but I think announcing something like that while youre still in highschool shows why you want to achieve that.

Actions speak louder than words, we dont want cheerleaders.

This is an alledged email from the kid that is circulating:

Hey ***,

How's life at the academy? I found out that I'm already placed on the most wanted list by nearly everyone person who's read the article published by our local newspaper. However, I gotta say I was nervous at first, but it's really weird. I almost want to see what everyone has in store for me when I get there. This should make things a WHOLE lot more interesting than having not singled myself out. I don't know if it's going to be fun, but challenging seems to be the right way to describe this now, and I can't wait to get pushed, forced to my limits; let's see if Beast breaks me. I still would like to do politics, because (just think about this), if not a cadet than who? Obama or Clinton, that's who!

Go Army!! Beat Navy!!!

Very Respectfully,

Candidate Cadet *** *** III

_-------

Maybe he's a great guy, but he should stop digging the hole deeper and just try to lay low.

The more I hear, the more I wonder if this is some kind of hoax ... xxx III digging the hole deeper (per MrGreenApple) seems to be over the top!

Wow, I'm glad I got out of the military and went to a real school instead of putting in an officer package. Most of you guys sound like douchebags. No wonder most officers were such tools...

dvrjosh, being as some of the core values of the military include honor, integrity and respect, I can see by your choice of words why it wasn't a good fit for you. Good luck in life.
