hey everyone, i am in a complete panic mode because no matter how many work study positions i apply to, i can't seem to get accepted into a job. i made all my financial plans based on the assumption that the 2000 dollar work study fund would be somewhat of a guaranteed money and that i would get a job to get me that 2000 but now the welcome week starts in a week and i still dont have a job! i can't afford to pay another 2000 a semester on top of everything else, i really need a job.

my friend said she got a work-study job at her college when she got there on the move-in date (according to her, her college basically brought all the job-needed-but-jobless students into a one big hall and they all ended up with a job each at the end after a series of on-the-spot interviews). does anything like this exist in u of minnesota?? maybe something during the freshman welcome week? maybe?

thank you so much for your help

Were you able to land a job? We’re in the same situation for next fall - need to get a work study gig for D.

BigBadDad…Not sure if you’ve seen this yet, but check out the information regarding the Freshman Job Guarantee program. We don’t have any first-hand experience with the program though, so I can’t tell you anything directly about it. It looks like it’s limited to the first 500 applicants, but if your D can get her name in right away once they send out the notification e-mail it sounds like she’d definitely be able to get something. It’s certainly worth a shot!!

Don’t know if it’ll work or not -
Due to the high demand for participation in this program, a lottery system is used to select these 500 students. Information about the program will be emailed in mid-July to incoming freshmen who have confirmed their enrollment.

Would be nice though. We’re also talking about doing sufficient UROP work that pays. Thanks for the heads up though!

I won’t come right out and say the freshman job guarantee is bogus. I will say my D and her friend both signed up for this and neither of them were able to get a job thru the program. Basically the program was a job fair and all the campus employers claimed they just didn’t have as many open positions as they anticipated. That being said, it can’t hurt to apply and if you’re not picky you may get something.
