Can't shake bad feelings about Case.

Thanks for the quick feedback! We are all set for a 1/22 visit, on our way to visit family in Columbus and then Carnegie Mellon Sleeping Bag Weekend 1/24-1/25. Just got back the confirmation and am awaiting schedule email. I’m getting excited about the trip.

My son has loved his rigourous IB program, with tons of music EC along the way (piano, sax, composing). So even though he wants to major in Engineering (or Physics or Math), he wants strong Humanities classes as well.

We have a great state school, CO School of Mines, an hour away… but that will likely be too techie-centric. And CU Boulder may be just too darn big (25,000 students) and also to close to home. His favorite choice right now is Harvey Mudd (part of Claremont Colleges… 5 adjacent colleges/5000 students), with undergrad emphasis and lots of research opportunities. But Mudd is pricey even if he gets their merit scholarship. I’m thinking that CWRU will have some of the attributes that he liked at Mudd (except of course palm trees), with good scholarship opportunity. He is a National Merit Semifinalist with superb SAT scores and GPA.

sxnhe: I also considered general vibe of the student body. When I visited a school I’ll call X, it seemed as if everyone I ran into had only negative things to say, and would rather be somewhere else. Granted, I could have run into the 4 or 5 most negative people on campus, but I had to make the decision somehow. That’s why I strongly recommend overnights.

I have heard that the main problem students have with Case is the “Sages” curriculum. Nobody seems to like it and the requirements are considered to be a real pain in the ass.

We love to whine about it and they are a pain, but do it right and all 3 classes are easy A’s. It’s very rare to find a SAGES that will teach you something, I mean, some are awesome (like a journalism one taught by someone who writes for Cleveland’s main paper) but I think most are not.
Besides the first freshman one, I didn’t think I’d learn much (I’m a decent writer–don’t take my posts as samples, they’re usu pretty rough on the editing–, maybe if I were pretty terrible I would have learned more by just having to practice writing).

My strategy: sign up for 2 SAGES each semester, during drop-add period figure out which one is more interesting/easier and then voila! you have a cushion class.

Thanks for the heads up everyone…I just saw that my son was admitted…yay! I have one question though…I read earlier on this forum that something like 81% of kids take 6 years to graduate. Is that really true? Can’t you get through in 4? Not sure I want to pay for 6 years of private undergrad…there will be nothing left for grad, if he chooses.

Perhaps the statistic you saw was the 6-year graduation rate, which is a fairly common statistic that measures how many students graduate in 6 years. It does not mean that 81% require 6 years, but rather that over 6 years, 81% of matriculated students will graduate (some in 3 years, some in 4 years, some in 5 years, some in 6).

Because Case is so generous with AP credit, my sophomore son and a number of his friends already have senior standing. Right now, he thinks he will be able to complete both his BS and most of, if not all, his masters, in 4 years at Case.

Congratulations on your son’s admission!

can someone expand on what exactly SAGES is?

My son is finishing up his freshman year at Case and will be transferring in the fall with a sizeable amount of debt to show for it. He was absolutely miserable there. No matter how many visits you make or how good it feels you never know until you get there. I still think it is a good school just not for everyone. I can say go to urban dictionary and look up Case. According to my son it is all true…

cdcreator: Why not post the things that your son did not like about CWRU? Was there anything he liked? Where is he going next year?

Anyone that checks Urban Dictionary should read beyond the first definition.

Try Google: College P R O W L E R (without the spaces)

Are there any parties at case? I have to know because even though I work hard I know than Im gona have a lot of stored energy and I will need to party hard!!!

I went up there last week, and while there were parties, I heard its not a usual thing.
