Can't Sleep!! What can I do?!

So, I've been at college for quite a bit of time now, and I have a problem...I can't sleep! The room doesn't die down until 1 or 2 AM, which is ok, except that my roommate's alarm clock goes off at 7 every morning, waking me up. Five hours just isn't enough sleep for me! I don't know what to do. Most recently I've missed three history classes in row (my first class most mornings) because I'm just too tired to drag myself out of bed.

I'm not some boring nerdy prude that always studies, but I'm just a little atypical in that I need extra sleep to function properly (I slept 9-10 hours a night in HS). I don't want to kick people out of our room, because making friends is important to me, and I know I can't tell my roommate not to use the alarm clock...

Help?

So you mean that your roomate is keeping people in the room until 2 in the morning? You should probably talk to your roomate and agree to kick people out by 12 or to at least hang out with people elsewhere on weekdays. As for other sources of noise/light, you could wear eye shades and ear plugs.

I agree with mbird. Yes you want to be social, but that doesn't have to last till 1-2 am. By midnight just tell people you have to get up at 7 so you need to get some sleep & you'll see them later.

You need to develop a regular sleeping routine to help your body adjust so you won't be so dead tired & you'll get more rest out of the sleep you do get. Waking up at the same time, and going to bed at the same time, everyday. Even doing the same actions before bed & after waking up help. The first few days are rough - force yourself out of bed, no matter what, but you'll get used to 7-8 hrs instead of 9-10. If you need a mid-afternoon nap occasionally, go ahead.

Agree with the others on not having people in the room that late.

As for the alarm thing; not much you can do I guess, short of wearing earplugs. You'll just have to get back to sleep after it wakes you up.

Nice.

I get about 3 hours most nights. I'd love to get 5 hours tonight; I have an english paper that I need to start.

Yeah I had the same problem so I talked to my roommate and she stopped bringing people late and drinking often in the room. :/ She also has a loud alarm clock but I usually get up before her so. Is it just a beeping alarm clock or something outrageously loud? (like my roommate ddoesn't use a normal alarm clock but rather sticks the volume up really high on some radio channel with just pure static)

You need to talk frankly with your roommate and compromise. Set a time which guests need to leave, or take their socializing to another place.
