CAP21 Ending? A Message from Dean Campbell to CAP21 Admitted Students

NotMamaRose - I feel that last response was a bit hostile. I DID “take the time” to contact Patricia Decker as the letter instructed. The letter was signed by Liz Bradley but, it clearly stated that we should address questions to Patricia Decker. I spoke with her on the phone. Patricia was friendly however, as I stated before she said she was not at liberty to give me any details that were not yet finalized. She was extremely general. This conversation was yesterday.

One correction to the last post: The letter we received was from Mary Schmidt Campbell.

The problem above is that the letter sent to the incoming freshmen directed inquiries be sent or calls to Patricia Decker. The letter I have seen that went to current CAP21 students (not incoming ones) directed inquiries to Liz Bradley. Liz is apparently giving some specific information now and Patricia perhaps was not able to do so. So, I can see the respective families and students calling or writing whomever their letters told them to.

So, mrsmia, since some families have gotten some information from Liz who is the head of Tisch Drama, you might want to try her next even though the letter you got directed you to Patricia Decker.

One other possibility is that mrsmia called yesterday but those receiving specific answers to their direct inquiries to Liz were informed today and so perhaps Patricia could not specify details yesterday but can now. Just guessing that besides being a different person, the timing was also different.

Would it be possible for anyone to post some of the new details on this board please? I e-mailed Liz Bradley already but I’m afraid it’s going to take forever and I can’t wait to learn more!

No hostility was intended, mrsmia! I was merely attempting to help by rather pointedly suggesting that those who want to receive a rather comprehensive Q & A send an email to Chair Bradley, who seems to have sent it out to any number of people (including myself).

For various reasons, I am not comfortable sharing the contents of the email here on College Confidential, which is a large, public forum.

But I have confidence that those who email Chair Bradley will receive the same information that I and some other TSOA/CAP21 parents of my acquaintance have received.

Again, apologies if I offended anyone. I recognize that feelings are running high and the rumor mill is in full gear! But I truly think some of those concerns will be alleviated if people send an email to Chair Bradley. :)

Liz Bradley still hasn’t replied to my e-mail yet. NMR, would you feel comfortable sending some of the details through a private message?

clay et all - I am getting the impression that TSOA is replying to people in the order that they have received people’s emails (and perhaps phone calls as well), because from what I have experienced, that is pretty much what is happening.

For example, some of my friends, who promptly reacted to the email that was sent to the students last week, received additional information sooner than myself, because I actually did not sent an email detailing my concerns until early this week.

Again, really too much information to share on, what I consider, a largely anonymous forum, but I will say that it has put most of my concerns to bed for now ;).

I am connected to NYU Tisch and here is what I know.
All of the external studios are being phased out over the next few years. Strasberg and Cap21 were the first to go. I doubt the motive is financial. The external studios receive a small fraction of each student’s tuition to train them. External studio teachers earn less than half of the salary internal studio (ETW, Meisner, Classical) teachers are paid-so if anything, consolidating all of the training studios under the University pay scale will mean that more tuition will go to salary and facilities than is currently the case. I believe the decision is one of improving and controlling the quality of the training. (This is not to impugn the quality of training at any of the external studios. ) In the long run this is a good thing for students.

caesarf, I am interested in who told you that NYU will phase out ALL of its external studios. Can you share, please?

NotMamaRose, it’s pretty obvious that over the next few years Tisch will end it’s connection with the external studios. I bet in the next 5-10 years, all drama studios will be in-house and run by Tisch. Why would they keep these external studios and not own everything?

caesarf,
In what capacity are you connected to NYU Tisch? Faculty? Administrative? Student? Parent?

If you are on the faculty or an admissions rep or have some other official position at NYU/Tisch, you should contact CC’s Forum Administrator, Roger Dooley so that he can verify your status as a College Rep according to the Terms of Service so that members will know that you work for NYU and are not just claiming inside information.

This is also what I heard.

It certainly seems to make sense what caesarf said. I was just asking basically what soozievt was asking: in what capacity does this individual work at NYU?

My hunch is that caesarf posted as he did to protect his identity yet still be able to provide inside information. Maybe everyone can take it for what it is, put credence in it or not, as you prefer, and keep the low key pipeline open…

This development is interesting, as it does not really come as a surprise, but is merely a sign of the times. It is the ongoing discussion whether or not to “outsource expertise” or “develop such expertise in-house”.

You see this on a regular basis in large companies where people outsource customer service, purchase order management, training, global logistics, and even manufacturing etc.

I understand that the reason why Tisch first used the “outside studio” concept, was to have a more diverse and intense offering of different techniques and training styles. It became an important reason why many students opted to study Drama at Tisch, as one could pursue multiple techniques. Managing outside studios comes with a different set of challenges however, and it appears that Tisch at this point in time feels that they can do a better job, or at least match what is currently being offered, with full control and authority. While it remains to be seen if that is indeed the case, it is obvious that Tisch has a lot at stake, which prompts me to believe that they will pull out all the stops to make things work.

I hate the fact that we can’t post links here, but there was an article from June 16th on Broadwayworld that mentions the new studio and its partnership with some high school theater competition.
Just google "NYU’s Tisch School Of The Arts Pledges Support For The 1st Annual Jimmy Awards

Came back to check on this thread and find it interesting it seems to have died off. So suddenly the FREQUENT NYU supporters/posters are now suddenly quiet and saying email NYU admin yourself, there is too much info to put here??? Very interesting!!!

Mom4X, I am one of those NYU Tisch parents who post pretty frequently and your post made me giggle, as it seems to kind of imply there is some kind of subterfuge going on. I can assure you that’s not the case! What information we have been given has been posted here already by someone.

Those of us who are current parents were merely encouraging other parents to communicate their and their students’ concerns to the drama dept chair because we felt that was the very best way for the drama dept chair to get an idea of what questions and concerns various parents and kids had, rather than having one or two people communicating to the administration on behalf of all the others.

At this juncture, I am satisfied with the information that has flowed our way so far and know that more will be coming soon. I continue to be thrilled that my D chose to go to NYU Tisch and am extremely satisfied with the education and training she is receiving.

Hahaha, I could have quite possibly written the exact same post NMR just did :D. We are indeed quite satisfied with the information we have received, which explains why we really don’t have anything to add.

At one point, it became very clear that only a handful of us were communicating with Tisch and CAP21 directly, whereas we felt it was important that both Tisch & CAP felt that more people were looking for answers, hence our posts encouraging people to go to the source.

Thanks for the replies. I get Qs all the time about MT schools, since I had two do the audition process, and of course my MT kids are friends with other MT kids, etc… When they ask about NYU, do you know what the Class of 2014 is applying to? I presume it is the new program under the TSOA’s own umbrella and not CAP21. Is that correct?
