Accepted to Texas A&M university(2,000), SMU, TCU, BAYLOR (34,00) University of Iowa (60,000) Penn state University. Waiting on University of Texas at Austin (capped) brother goes here

What does capped mean

what was your major?

Your stats are good but because you’re a non auto admit you only had about a 25% chance of getting in. Many people that have SAT scores 2000+ have gotten capped as well. I believe the reason you didn’t get in was because your ACT is lower than the average admitted for non auto admits

Ya your act is pretty low.

Undergraduate can I pm someone my appeal

Also if people reject their acceptance can cap people be asked to join ut or does that go to wait listed people

@135pipe…that is what the wait list is for. But UT offers admission based on projected yield so they have a good idea of the percentage of students that accept admission. Based on that number is how the decide to make the offers they do.

Also, I have never read of a successful appeal from anyone on CC or have I known of a successful appeal personally.

Deleted it

Im pretty sure a cap year followed by a transfer to Ut austin is about the same price as 2 years at UT austin. Its not any more expensive, at least i dont think so.

Did u like the letter is it good

The issue I have with your appeal is that you blame everyone. If I were on the appeal board I would want a student to tell me what they will do at the University that will change the world. Tell me what your goals are, what your vision is. You can’t change the world by pointing fingers.

In regard to money for CAP, if your parents can’t afford a University that costs less, how can they afford one that costs more? I see your EFC in your original post, but do you know if you are Pell eligible? I would assume you are, and if so, that grant is good at any college. You will also get the top 10% grant if you are in state and in the top 10%. Everything else, will be loans. UT’s biggest scholarship comes from the Presidential Achievement Scholarship (other that the 40 acre scholars…but that is really the big league) but after looking at your stats, I don’t think your test scores will qualify you for those.

I know many students that do CAP to save money. Can you explain why you think it will cost you more?

Yeah I totally agree with collegeshopping. Your letter comes off way too harshly because you blame your parents for everything you couldnt/wanted to do. If you are really passionate about becoming a longhorn, I think CAP is definitely something you should consider.

135pipe, I admire your drive. However, some of your stats are just average. The act score is in the bottom 25% of acceptances at ut. The presidential scholar/Obama letter is fairly common, you just have to apply with volunteer hours. Several people have hundreds of volunteer hours more than you. Plus you have a lower uw gpa than the ut average. I think you are fortunate to be capped as they recognize your activities and drive. Good luck with your appeal, but please have a plan b in mind as I would hate to see you lose other opportunities while chasing this appeal. You can always transfer in later with a good gpa. I wish you the best of luck, please have a plan b in mind. I do not think the appeal will not do much but delay your other opportunities. When one door closes another one opens.

I wasn’t blaming was just saying why I couldn’t do as many extracurriculars as I wanted to do because of that. I also posted all the things I achieved afterwards. Also thank you very much for responding. And if they reject it I will go to a&m and see if I can transfer.

It’s because of the stress and being unhappy their for a whole year and also I can only choose Arlington or Dallas is what my parents want me to choose. Also because the loans I take from cap will be aded to uts loans.

Thank you all for what you have said, I already signed up for texas a&m orientation just in case ut didn’t work out. I have several backup plans ,

I think you are wise to consider texas a&m to provide yourself a positive environment. Good luck with everything 135pipe. You have wonderful drive so set your sights on your goal!

Thanks hopefully appeal is taken but we wait and see

So sorry you didn’t get into UT, but you have some great options. Go to A&M orientation and let them seduce you into being an Aggie. Look into CAP.

No UTSA? People love it there. Just anecdotal, but the CAP students I have known have enjoyed their time there. It is growing like crazy, not the quiet commuter school it once was. Kids who stay and graduate do go to fantastic grad and professional schools.

UT Dallas? It is a quieter campus, but it has a strong reputation for STEM subjects, and is more generous with merit aid than UT. Again, just anecdotal, but I know some kids there who are very very happy and whose parents are also pleased because of all the $ they got. UT is stingy with merit money.
