Should I bring my brand new bmw to berkeley? I live an hour away but I heard 1. my car will get broken into 2. parking is horrible.

depends…

hahahahahhahahhaha

yes it is, but i’m bringing my car anyways.

where r u planning on living investment? i heard there was a parking garage across the street from unit dos

I would love to bring my car too since I only live an hour and half away. Can anyone provide some detailed information on how to get a parking spot? I heard you need to live at least two miles away to get an on-campus spot.

i think if you prove that you have an off-campus job you can get one too…or maybe i’m thinking of UCLA lolsketch.

Maybe I should just commute everyday LOooooL

Hmm yeah I have a semi new BMW too… still debating but I think I might just not bring it. My parents house is like an hour-long bart ride away. If I need it I’ll just have to plan ahead. And for everything else, I’m planning on walking. Maybe I’ll get a bike…?

If we did bring cars, how much does Berk charge per semester to park it? And would it be in a garage or just outside? Anyone know?

Thanks for the responses. Anyone from Berkeley actually know the answer to these questions regarding parking permits, parking spots and crime?

The biggest issues will be parking tickets galore. The city of Berkeley could erase all third-world debt with their parking ticket revenues. You also cannot drive your car around the perimeter of campus with any ease or timeliness. You will get to places faster, walking, and be in better shape for it.

You would be wise to opt for BART over driving, as well, because it could take you 1 1/2 hrs. to get into SF, anyway, while leaving your carbon footprint, simultaneously.

Of the kids I know who brought cars to Berkeley, ALL of them took them back home, either over a weekend or during the winter break–too great a liability and not much pay-off.

broken into everyday? berkeley cant be any worse than LA can it? good lord.

i always think of berkeley as a suburb!

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I applied already for the campus housing, and I don’t know if the school have like a dorm parking lot or something like that. But I think a bike will work just as well. some excercise adn thing like that.

@Investment: vanity, vanity. BMW.

A brand new BMW? One of my friends at Berkeley had his 1998 Lexus broken into and all his stuff stolen out of it, laptop, driver’s license and all. I don’t even know what Berkeley car thieves will do to a brand new beamer ._.
Plus, if you bring your car you’re seriously going to be spending more time finding a parking spot than driving. I wouldn’t recommend bringing it.

Investment, PM me if you’re still not sure about where you’re going to park yo’ cah

Depending on where you live, there is a chance that you car will be broken into. A couple of my friends have had their cars broken into and one even got his car stolen in the past 2 years.

@ gottagettocal why would you keep your drivers license in your car?

dudes, just dont keep anything is your car and youre fine. srsly.

I have two cars and parking for both is clearly too much to ask for. I’m looking at apartments (within walking distance) that offer off street parking or a garage and will be bringing my Audi. I’m leaving my Porsche at home (bright red & manual) as Berkeley is no place for a car you really care about if you will be parking on the street. I like to compare Berkeley street activity to Isla Vista in Santa Barbara.

@Liz: My friend had his backpack with his laptop and wallet in his car and the backpack got stolen with everything in it. Yea, strange that he wasn’t carrying his wallet around on his person. Idk what he was thinking lol.

@keith I would be willing to donate my time to keeping your porsche safe for a small fee and user privileges.

lol @ Keith bragging about his cars on a college forum.

I wasn’t going to (not a stereotype person), but all this BMW stuff was irritating me. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great but I (being German) learn from experience. Hey being a CC transfer student exposed me to working full-time and helped me understand “fruits of your labor” but let’s hope I can save some money over the summer for food/necessities.
