car insurance and living near campus

so...I plan on moving near UT campus to where I can take the bus to go to school reducing my car use by at least 50%-70%

Would it be wise to switch from fully covered to liability? to save some money?

I really would only be using my car for leisure to go out and about once(movies and friends and stuff) I live down there...but really even then..I might be able to pull off riding the bus around for that stuff.

I drive a 2004 honda civic si. The car is paid off so I can get any insurance I want.

It'd be helpful if anyone who lives near enough to ride the bus to school and owns a car gives me some insight.

My daughter has her car at school and although it is easy for her to get around when and if she wants, she admits she could make do without. The $900 a year parking space plus the cost of the car, may just not be worth it. She takes her car to a store on average every 10 days or so. Less if her parking space is good…lol. The bus system is very good, and can get you all most anywhere.

As far as cutting down to just liability. I would have to assume the majority of issues at UT would involve vandalism and that of course would not be covered. So you have to ask yourself if someone smashed your window in, could you afford to repair it or could you live with it as is?

Locness,

are you going to live in an apartment not far from UT? Is the parking free?

The liability insurance is best for an old car with big mileage when cost of repair is higher than the remaining cost of the car.
If it’s just a bumper (that you don’t obliged to fix, by the way) insurance will pay, if it’s something serious and expensive insurance will pay you the remaining cost of the car that can be $500 and that’s it, the car would be “totaled”.

Just to make sure ask your insurance agent about details, what will be fixed and what will not taking into consideration your car’s age and mileage.

I’m going to be living in an apartment where paying for a garage is $60 a month
and a carport is $20

…I do not plan on taking my car to school…pretty much ever. it will sit at the apartment unless I want to go to the store randomly or go hang out with a friend somewhere.

I mean i bought my car for $7500 and spent about 2.5k to fix it up myself. Mostly the car has sentimental value…I’ve had it fully covered because I still live at home and can afford to do so.

my question is…

If i live close to campus will I be using my car often? or is my estimate of car use correct?

If I will only be using my car once every week…I think I can live with liability.
I doubt someone will break into my honda fit looking car. and even then I keep absolutely nothing in my car, its empty pretty much.
there is nothing about my car that screams break into me.
Is theft a problem near downtown?
I havent had a problem in north austin.
