Hi everyone, I am currently a freshman in college and am feeling pretty lost about my future. I have wanted to work with animals ever since I was a kid and it is still a dream of mine. However, I have also developed a huge love for design and fashion. At this point I am completely stuck in whether I want to pursue a career in fashion or continue studying animals. This may sound stupid, but I want a career that allows me to wear high fashion and trendy pieces everyday and I am afraid that a career in animal science wouldn’t allow me to ever do that (I’ve never seen any vets or researchers in designer boots or leather jackets).
I have considered double-majoring in both fields just so I wouldn’t have to choose but I don’t know if that would help me much.
I just want to find a job that makes me happy without making me lose one of my biggest passions. Maybe I am missing out on a career that combines these two things? Any advice is appreciated.
Honestly if you can see yourself being anything other that a vet go for that. That is the advice lots of vets gave my son. They said if all you can see yourself doing is being a vet then that is the career for you. My son is a freshman in college studying to be a vet in the future. That was the only career he wanted. It sounds like you have another direction that would make you happy. I say go for that. Volunteer at an animal shelter or foster pets to get your animal “fix”. I don’t know any vets that really dress up at work BUT I know a lot that dress up after work. My son is a big fan of higher-end clothing and will wear it all the time except when working around animals. I think making a change will make you happier.
Do you have to wear the stylish clothes at work, or can you satisfy your love for fashion some other way - like an intensive hobby? Researchers can wear what they want, other than days when they’re working with the animals, when they might not want to wear anything too fancy lest it get damaged. But vets pretty much have to wear comfortable clothes because they’re working with animals pretty much every day.
I don’t really see a way you can bring those interests together unless you make clothes for dogs and sell them on etsy in your spare time as a vet lol
