Carlton Apartments available

I'm trying not to be spam here, I have no affiliation with the apartments or anything.

I am looking at a job in Berkeley and have been looking at how outrageous apartment housing costs are. I searched through old posts and saw that the Carlton Apartments are cheap but rarely available. Well, today they posted an ad on Craigslist that they're available.

Pricing is $500/month with all utilities (water, heat, electricity, garbage) included. Essentially, it's a dorm room for $500/month. There's a community bathroom and no kitchens.

This is the lowest I've found for rent in the Berkeley area. I've been told that Evans Manor is cheap too ($370/month) and that has no kitchen either and a reviewer on ApartmentRatings.com said that "the bathrooms are absolutely abysmal, unacceptable, furbrishment, especially the Resident Evil-style 1800's bathtubs and the showerheads that fall off."

Here's a link to the ad on Craigslist: UC BERKELEY STUDENTS!! studio apartments 10 SECOND WALK from campus!!!

I'm going to copy-paste the text so I will be able to search for this message for future reference.

Please note: due to the high volume of emails and applications we receive, you are not guaranteed an apartment until a formal lease is signed. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, age, familial status, etc.

UC BERKELEY STUDENTS! The Carlton is offering housing located just a ten-second walk away from campus!!! We are located across the street from the UC Berkeley campus (nearest cross street: Bancroft + Telegraph). Located at 2338 Telegraph Ave. (Berkeley, CA 94704) in between Crepes-A-Go-Go and Blondies Pizza, most students walk by, and don't even realize that there are hundreds of apartments right above them!

Our studio apartments range in monthly rent from AS LOW as $500. This amount varies depending on the size of the room as well as its location. All utilities (water, heat, electricity, garbage) are FREE. We do not provide a kitchen area in the building, but there are plenty of restaurants and eateries located within a few seconds walk of The Carlton, such as Blondies Pizza, Crepes-A-Go-Go, Subway, Chipotle, Wallgreens, Sam’s Market, and many more. Bathrooms are shared throughout the floors (dorm style), however these are private bathrooms (one person at a time). The university's gym (the RSF) is just a 20-second walk away.

If you are looking for housing we would love to hear from you. Please email carltonrentals@gmail.com for further information with the subject line: "studio apartments." You must include your full name, year in school, major, current residence information, and telephone contact number. After receiving your email, we will go over your information and respond as quickly as we can. NOTE: The resident manager has a private number, so please be sure to answer your phone when the caller ID registers as "unknown" or "private." We do not, however: negotiate terms of the lease, email photos of our apartments, sign leases with 3rd parties, or hold rooms. If you would like to see an apartment, your appointment date can be arranged via the resident manager. Our lease period extends throughout the entire school year (usually a 12-month lease).
Please note: We are looking to sign immediately with tenants. Please do NOT respond to this post if you are out of the country or out of the state. However, feel free to email us as soon as you have come back in the vicinity of Berkeley and are able to view the rooms. Thank you.

We offer a front desk clerk downstairs for added security, as well as security cameras inside the building for additional monitoring. We also provide 7-day week janitorial cleaning to all of our floors, with a coin-operated laundry room inside the building.

Thank you for your interest in The Carlton and we hope to see you soon!

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen:

Hotel Carlton - UC Campus Area - Berkeley, CA

Yea, I looked at the rooms, they're really cheap but complete cr@p. $500/mo won't get you very much in Berkeley.

The layout and style is similar to the tenement housing on the east coast in NYC with shared bathrooms and kitchens.

I've heard there's apparently some notice/agreement you have to sign before renting stating that you know the building is seismically unsafe. That way if the building collapses the owner and landlord is free from any liability for injuries or deaths. It's made of bricks and dates back to the early 1900's when it was still a gay hotel.

I'm a student at Cal (4th year). I moved into the Carlton about a week ago, so I can't say how it's been over the course of a long period of time, but I can tell you how it's been so far. So far, it's been fine -- my room is pretty spacious, although I've peeked into some of the others and mine is slightly larger than many of the other rooms here (I paid a little extra).

The room itself is nice and livable. It's a good deal in terms of price and location (RIGHT next to campus).

However, people never get out of their rooms (if you are the type who likes solitude [like me] this is fine -- but otherwise you might want to look elsewhere for housing) and the bathrooms aren't great but tolerable...some rooms have a sink (mine does) so that cuts a lot of time having to walk over to the bathroom. A sink in your room definitely helps if you want to cook food.

Although the Carlton is an older building and seismically unsafe, a lot of buildings around and on the UC Berkeley campus are also seismically unsafe. The ones over on the north side (Foothill), the Greek Theatre, Wurster (ironically), and others are (some of the ones on the northeast part of campus are located right ON the fault area) -- so if there's a major earthquake that ever happened, it's more than likely that those buildings will be pretty damaged.

Hope this helps a little!

Wurster is seismically unsafe? Haha that is hilarious

I pay 500/mo right now, utilities covered as well, plus kitchen, spacious living, no commuting distance (we get airbears in half of the house), social housemates, free laundry, free furniture, etc.

Cheap is good, but property management, neighbors, and amenities are also pretty damn important. No kitchen means you'll be dishing out a couple hundred more on eating out every month. Improvising with portable electric burners, grills, and microwaves can be a pain. Something on the southside that close to campus at that kind of price is guaranteed crap.

That's a great deal. Where do you live? And are you sharing your room with anyone else?

I too am wondering where you guys are finding the deals. I haven't found anything under $1000/mo in the area for an actual apartment.

i really need a new place to live this semester and i sorta hate my roomates-they are pigs to the max and I am their polar opposite. needless to say, I want out and this place seems cheap and is very close to campus. and even though it has no kitchen, I can take a microwave and minifridge, right?

this place is listed on craigslist right now but I cant find any information on it so does anyone on this forum live here or know anyone else who does that can tell me more about it?

THANKS A MILLION!!!

I hate to bump old threads, but I’ve been looking for an apartment and the Carlton is currently renting. Prices seem really cheap especially since it’s just right off campus on Telegraph.

I’ve been to the showing, and it seems like a nice enough place, the bathrooms and laundromat I saw were nice and clean. I intend to get a meal plan anyway so I don’t mind the lack of kitchens. The rooms seemed nice enough although it’s not furnished but the reviews on [yelp and insider pages](http://www.yelp.com/biz/hotel-carlton-berkeley-2) make it sound like some kind of hell hole. The reviews about ex-cons working/living there and stealing stuff and about someone getting raped aren’t exactly very appealing as well.

So, does anyone know what the Carlton is really like? I didn’t get a chance to talk to any of the current tenants since it’s spring break, and the place was really quiet and empty during the showing.

I am going to live there for a year, and my floor will be the FIFTH floor. What will it be like? I am looking for some objective reviews. IWhile I went to have a tour, it seems that some tenants just checked mails and the clerks were NOT so bad to them. When SOME tenants saw the manager, they did not feel anything bad, which is inconsistent with the reviews in multiple websites. Are those tenents actually fake?

@nihonko

How much are you paying for your room? When I went to the showing, there were 3 rooms available, one for 700 (the largest and with a window looking out onto Telegraph), 550 (smaller but with a sink and window looking out onto Telegraph as well) and 500 (no sink and window is facing some empty chunk in the center of the building of something).

Some of the reviews online are from as recent as the last quarter of 2010 so that makes me kind of apprehensive about staying there.

@copperback

I paid for $500, facing the building center. However, this is the highest floor in the inner circle and the sun light is sufficient enough. I want to ask how you will prepare for your furniture. (gobears@live.ie)

BTW, which floor are you living in? I’ll also move in this May. Maybe we can help together.

Thank you!

@nihonko

I’m staying on the 4th floor. My lease starts in mid-June which is just before my summer school classes start since I intend to return home for a month once finals are over.

I’m not sure how I’m going to get furniture as well; did the manager offer to sell you furniture? When I was there for the showing, he said he could get me some furniture for cheap, he quoted me 30$ for a double bed i think but I didn’t follow up on that. The clerk also mentioned that closer to the end of the semester, most people will start to move out, maybe you could see if the people who are moving out are willing to sell you their furniture.

@copperback

Edric, the manager did not manage to sell me the furniture. However, he managed to sell me a fridge and a microwave. I think we’d better pick free things up on Craigslist.
