Carnegie Mellon AP/EA 2009

This seems to be a lesser-known program, so I guess I'll start the thread ;)

APEA - Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

Basically, in this program, you go to CMU for six weeks, take 2 college classes (very wide variety to choose from), then have the opportunity to apply EA (CMU is normally an ED-only school). And its all FREE! All you pay is transportation there and back.

Deadline is March 1, plenty of time for procrastinators... cough me cough.

Note: This AP/EA is through the Summer Programs for Diversity. "Regular" AP/EA is about $7000. They are both held at the same time, share classes, otherwise equal, but have a different application process.

Wow, nearly a month and no one has posted on this thread? I’m thinking about applying–and I have to decide SOON because my school requires a month lead-time for transcripts–but I’m already in to a (not extremely expensive but still costly) program that I like more.

Yea, nobody likes my thread cries

But all I need to do is polish my essays and get my counselor to put her req in a signed/sealed envelope (I don’t think AP/EA requires signed/sealed, but it can’t hurt…)

There’s nothing to lose by applying. It’s free, and the essays aren’t too terrible.

You’re right about the essays–after the TASP application, no essay prompt is scary. :D

My indecision over applying: if I do get in and I don’t get the scholarship for my other program (French immersion), I’ll feel obligated to attend AP/EA because, hello, free + gas > $3k. But I really want to spend 5 weeks speaking nothing but French, in my beloved adopted-homeland of Canada. Still, the AP/EA humanities and programming classes sound interesting, if not life-changing.

And thus my indecision continues. Sigh.

I’ve checked out the site but can’t find anything about the program dates? Anybody???

Opening day is June 27; I can’t find the ending date, but you should be able to estimate it.

Hmm, regular AP/EA is so costly! But I know I don’t qualify as in a low income.

Do you guys think being Filipino make me diverse? (I know it’s a stretch). The only way I could attend AP/EA is through the Summer Program for Diversity since my parents don’t want to pay that much money for me this summer (not because we can’t afford it, but because they’re filipino…and stingy…)
Oh, dear. I really want to go to CMU this summer.

I think someone in last year’s thread mentioned Asians attending through the diversity program, so you should have a shot.

I’m thinking of applying! The only problem is the letter of recommendation from your counselor… my school’s counselors don’t really interact with us students a lot so I doubt my counselor even knows who I am…

Is the program open to current sophomores (rising jrs)? How competitive is it to get in?

hmm? you have to be a minority/ low-income to do this? i totally missed that…i assumed diversity meant a greater emphasis on creating a well-rounded group and the free part was for especially qualified students…

the website says we need recommendations “from two subject-area teachers”

so for example, if I’m applying to SAMS (Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science), I MUST get math and science teacher recommendations? thanks

Oh yay! This seems pretty cool.
