@thinkbig14 According to the CMU FAQ website, they do not accept LOCI’s as they are trying to create a more equitible and accessible application process.
Anywhere here received the Essay prompt which was sent to the select few waitlisted candidates?
They won’t send out essay prompt until after May 1st, they need to know if there will be any space available for the schools you applied, before asking you to write the essay.
anyone know if sending in a loci is a good or bad decision? i know they suggest not doing it, but I know people have had success getting off the waitlist from past years and they wrote one so…
@lostaquarian The best chance to get off the waitlist is to follow directions, you don’t want to pester the admissions committee with unnecessary information.
any one have a clue of when the waitlist results are coming out?
If you are going into premed, is it worth doing going through an internal transfer from CFA to MCS at CMU (got rejected from BXA but accepted into only CFA), or go to a different school where you can go straight into the premed track in the fall? Both the CMU environment and student community seem fitting, and there are so many opportunities to grow as an adult and expand your academic perspective from not only your professors, but also your peers-- it would just not feel great to feel a semester behind your classmates and rush to fill in the fall semester MCS credits.
@lalalalala321 May 1 onwards, idk if 5/1 is inc. but May 1 on. For those whove been given a priority WL option and theyve opted for it, its 5/1-5/8, so they hear in a week after may 1 confirmed, but for the rest (reg’s) , its 5/9-i think June 1
Again, the priority WL enrollment deadline is long gone, only the regular remains.
@Xenonite So you want to study pre-med but got into the School of Fine Arts? You better not assume an internal transfer is possible unless you call and ask several questions and get answers in writing. After doing more research S19 feels it’s not the best place for pre-med.
@caz0743 Is there a particular CMU faculty member I could contact about this situation?
@Xenonite No one’s gonna allow you a free transfer from schools after joining the College/University unless it explicitly says on the website for the specific school/major/college. In most cases, an internal major to major within the school transfer is easy, but not changing the school, and definitely not ‘just like that’
No one can help you avoid the tests and the questioning that’ll be done in order to change schools, as is done in most cases.
If you thought you could apply to a less selective school, and then switch to your true intended school for studies just like that, think again.
There still will be the testing and asking, and no one can get you out of it.
I agree with the previous poster. My son applied to BCSA and only was accepted to CFA as a viola performance major. I emailed the director of BCSA and she said that it would be no problem to transfer to BCSA after taking 3 CS prerequisites and getting B and above. Even it’s possible, my son still doesn’t want to take the risk. He has a Direct Admit to CS major at University of Washington and he’ll probably commit.
@pdxtigermom Thanks for the share. Here’s a good anecdotal evidence for u.
Also, keep in mid to weigh in the difficulty: of classes, flexible study, fitting in, the area, the college environment…when making a choice.
People are wise to take their decisions to the last min sometimes, in order to gain full retrospect of the future 4 yrs.
@Xenonite my eldest son attends cmu. There is a hierarchy (or pyramid) at cmu based on schools and majors where it is easy to change majors when going down the hierarchy but extremely difficult going up (or impossible). Computer science and computer engineering is at the very top, then engineering majors then Tepper, etc… I am not sure if CFA is above or below premed which I assume is in Dietrich or Mellon. My gut says it is possible to transfer to Dietrich and Mellon. But a quick call to a counselor will answer your question.
@xenonite I would suggest the Deans at both schools… CFA and MCS.
@caz0743 IMO its practically impossible to convince a change in the school at all, especially without any sort of test or paperwork. Good to try, but I highly doubt it.
@prouddad2020 Thank you for the anecdotal evidence.
IMO, its a real bad move to apply to a lesser competitive major/school (inside a college) that has different published acceptance rates, very inflexible towards switching, and contains majors separated by college under a different program (non liberal arts, non Open Curriculum, non ‘under a unified school’), with having the hopes of switching the major just like that after enrolled.
@TheGuy1 absolutely… @xenonite would most likely have to complete one full year in CFA then start the process…which does not even have to be approved. A big gamble in my opinion and certainly not the right path for pre-med.
@caz0743 Agreed! IMO, especially for premed, there needs to be a clear draw of enrollment and interest shown towards it from the start, since it stands apart as an area of study in ways. Taking a different major and switching it up plays badly on how the college might perceive this as well, if something like this is cares about by the student.
Such a reputed school of high stature needs to have you in the good books… no funny business of any kind that can be interpreted even remotely in a sketchy way.
Are you strong enough in the area for a science major at CMU? Those majors aren’t easy for the freshmen admitted directly into science. And getting a bad GPA can mess up your med school apps. I’d be more concerned about that, rather than just whether you could get the transfer done.
