Carnegie Mellon University Class of 2023 Regular Decision

@FloDad As a Georgia Tech alumnus whose son was accepted to both GT and CMU, I counsel you to go with CMU.

CMU has a Much lower Faculty Student ratio (13:1), which at Tech is horrible (17:1, and I think they’re lying). Your kid’s professors at Tech will never know her. I never knew mine.

Also, there is a MUCH more academically and geographically diverse population at CMU, whereas at GT over 60% of students are from Georgia and 90% are engineers. At CMU she will mingle with great artists, actors, authors, computer scientists, scientists, mathematicians, and entrepreneurs.

Look at the list of famous CMU alumni and compare it to famous GT alumni. Vastly different lists. Look up how many Nobel prizes have been awarded to each set of alumni.

Lastly, the State of Georgia has made it legal to carry guns on campus. CMU forbids it. That was the dealbreaker for me.

@Coloradomama is completely accurate. I am an alumn of GT, my son was accepted to both GT and CMU and I gladly will pay more for CMU because Tech is a huge place and you have be super aggressive to get any attention or help. My son attended a summer program at CMU and the professors were super supportive. He’s also diagnosed with Aspergers and they took that into account as well and worked with him.

Also, over 60% of GT students are from Georgia, whereas 65% of students at CMU are from 12 states (it’s on their website under admissions statistics).

Because there are so many Georgians, you can be certain that they are exercising their 2nd Amendment right, which has been reinforced by the State, to carry guns. CMU forbids it. Last year, a distraught student was shot down dead by the Campus Police because they suspected she was carrying a weapon. Not the environment I want my kid in, and frankly I’m relieved that Tech wasn’t my son’s top choice.

@PeterPerr You fail to mention that in the USNWR ranking Carnegie Mellon is in the spot immediately after Ga Tech. Why? I’m not sure because their overall score is 69 and CMU’s is 74 (you find that under “Indicators” if you subscribe to their rankings).

In fact, if you look at each of the elements that contribute to that score: Graduation and Retention Rates, Graduation Rate Performance, Expert Opinion, Faculty Resources, Student Excellence, Financial Resources, and Alumni Giving…
CMU and Tech are tied in nearly every measure, except with Faculty Resources where Tech has:

  • A ranking of 117th and CMU is 29, Tech has only 39% of its classes with 20 or fewer students whereas CMU has 65%, and the student faculty ratio is 22:1 whereas at CMU it’s 13:1.

I’m a Ga Tech alumn (BSEE 84), by the way, my son was accepted to both CMU and GT and I’m gladly paying more for CMU to have him attend. The rankings are just one factor to consider, and in fact, not that important when two schools are separated by 1 spot, are both in the top 10, and this is out of more than 4,000 universities in the U.S.

@calcollege2023 I ran the numbers for all schools my son applied (using Common Data Set numbers) to and last year’s yield at CMU was 37.7%

@MA_Papi Thank you, I hope last year’s yield was an anomaly

Last year’s yield was an anomaly. They were optimistic and estimated yield too high, and ended up took about 109 from WL (average 39 per year). So, this year they put the number lower… . They can fill the class with 37.5 % yield.

I recently got my financial aid package and they gave me a lot of money. I only have to pay 34,000 a year as opposed to 75,000. I am very concerned because I am waitlisted by them. According to the website, they typically pick the ones who are able to pay full tuition. Does anyone know anything about lower-income students being waitlisted and how much chance they’ll have of getting in? I really want to go to CMU!!!

@skieurope What is wrong with a father using his daughter’s account? I mean, he’s her FATHER and her legal guardian. Its not like shes sharing an account with a total stranger…

@skieurope You probably deleted some helpful posts too smh

Yes there are other factors to consider but if you look at the US News rankings for the individual engineering disciplines you will find that except for Computer GT far outranks CMU in everything. In some cases CMU doesn’t even rank in the top tier! So if you want CS go to CMU but if you want any other engineering program GT is the place to go. Oh of course the weather is better too.

Doubtful. @lenasharb

Here you go for all the score keepers and rank envy types.

@skieurope Whoa there! “Chinese” menu? Why are you associating Chinese menus in particular with this situation? It is one thing to inform me of the rules but to make a racist comment??

@jackson where is AI and robotics?

@jackson5123 I don’t know who you’re speaking to but I graduated from Tech (BSEE '84) and my son was just accepted this year. It’s a fine school, but having lived through 4+ years there and having seen the kind of attention that my son got at CMU’s summer program, I can tell that CMU is better. Plus I have neighbors whose kids graduated from CMU and rave about it whereas Tech made me and most of my alumni friends hate learning.

Sorry to hear your experience at GT was not good but the good news is it apparently got you a good enough job to afford CMU tuition. I wouldn’t use a summer program to judge what the experience will be. All I know is my kids did not want to apply to CMU once they saw the gloomy faces of the students when we visited. Maybe we only saw the engineering kids!

No doubt, both CMU and GT have tough programs, especially engineering.

IMO, for undergrad, the rankings DO NOT matter. So long as you are in the Top 10/ Top 20 street, house number 1 or 2 or 10 makes no difference whatsoever.

What I would seriously consider is the cost (and location). As an international, CMU is almost 80k for me whereas GT is 45k,

I would gladly pick GT over CMU. Paying double the amount is not justified for a mere difference of 4 rankings.

Also, since both are T5 programs, the teachers and teaching won’t be that different. It’s also pretty safe to assume that both are safe (else, why would people still go there). Again, since both are top schools, the quality of students would also be top notch. Thus, you can be confident that there are gonna be no rowdies or goons. And even if they are there, the police departments at the univs are very friendly.

I personally wouldn’t stress too much over it and argue which is better. Just see which suits you and choose that.

@whatsmypassword I think $25k a year difference not $35k. Difference is private vs state.

@all Maybe going forward this can be a 2023 Regular Decision thread and not GT VS CMU.

For anyone who sent in an LOCI, where is the best place to send it for CMU?
