OK, I'm trying to get this right. In CAS you have to:

-do one course in each of the 6 GenEd categories
-do two writing courses (WRIT 140 Writing and Critical Reasoning and WRIT 340 Advanced Writing)
-some diversity course??

Is that it? When do most freshman finish their GenEd requirements, within a year?

It's CLAS (College of Letters, Arts and Sciences)

You are correct, every undergraduate must go through the same GE program as you listed above.

Most people like to take their diversity course with one of the other required courses. For example, I'm taking SOCI-150gm. This is my Cat. VI class and because it has a "m" at the end of the course number, it also fulfills the diversity requirement too. So basically, when choosing a GE try to take one course with an "m" at the end of the number.

WRIT-140 HAS to be taken at the same time as your Cat. VI GE, because the Writing class is based off the GE course.

If you are an Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Music major, you do not take WRIT-140. You take WRIT-130 instead.

Typically, unless you're undeclared, you spread your GE classes throughout all 4 years. Unlike a lot of colleges, USC tries to get you into 100-level classes for your major fairly early.

and some GE courses can also be used towards your major right? i think the max is two.. am i wrong?

That's right, although I don't know anything about a max. I was able to complete my GE III with the same Physics class needed for engineering majors.

what are the six general ed categories and what types of courses can fulfill them?
