***Case Western Class of 2022 EA Thread***

@smileeokay ah i got one trying to convince me to join the band

Son was deferred.

It was his 2nd choice (after MIT which while he had the numbers he knew was a HUGE longshot just due to their selectivity) so he’s obviously bummed. He’s a strong, strong candidate too-while I know I’m his Mom, his numbers are there. 3.8 GPA, 9 AP’s, 40+ college credits upon graduation, 750 ELA/790 Math for total of 1540 total SAT score. 790 on Physics Subject Test and 750 on Math Subject Test 2. Many EC’s, volunteering, strong writer, very solid LOR’s, visited twice from out of state, tried to interview but there was no room on days we visited and never were again contacted to set one up despite trying multiple times.

I’m not sure what he’s missing… Maybe because he was applying to Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering which is super competitive and selective program?

same! I was so excited about getting in and then I saw it and it gave me a really good impression of the school. It looks like they read my interview notes.

I was accepted with a merit scholarship and I will be going. Does anyone know if it’s too late to apply for FAFSA since I have to commit by January 1st?

@PDX2018grad her Facebook messenger is lindseyl2000 let me know if this does not work.

@laly84100 If you already decided to commit, and if it were me, I would just submit FAFSA even the suggested deadline may have been passed. I don’t think there is any harm. BTW, case requires CSS profile as well.

Accepted with 28k University Scholarship, only 5500k financial “aid” = loans -_-
1490 SAT (780M, 710 EBRW; single sitting) and 34 ACT (single sitting)
4.61 W GPA, 3.91 UW GPA, 2nd in Class of 320

9 AP courses: 6 5’s, 2 4’s, 1 3’s.
Full Science-Orientated CCP schedule first semester Senior at local University in East Cleveland.

@LiisaMarie I’m from the Seattle area too!

Congrats @Dayruin! May I ask what major at Case?

@travelingmomof12 , don’t give up. Deferred is not denied. Encourage him to express continued interest in Case, assure them they’re his first choice now, update them on any new accomplishments. His stats are excellent. Sometimes they’re protecting their yield but will accept such a strong candidate at RD round. Chances are he’d get substantial merit, too. Best of luck!

Accepted with 23k per year scholarship
Also Invited to attend the music school without audition

No visit or interview
NYC Private School
Choice Major: Physics
3.6 GPA - NO AP’S (Not offered at school but took the hardest and maximum amount of courses possible in the school curriculum.)
No class rank (school doesn’t do it)
33 ACT - 35 English 31 Math 36 Reading 31 Science
Very serious cello player involved in numerous performances and ensembles - submitted a supplementary video
Squash
Soccer

Also received a note from the chair of the music department saying that I’d been accepted to be a music major even though I didn’t audition based on my video

i’m not sure whether to cringe at the fact so, so many of you are being deferred with 34+ ACT scores or silently rejoice because people with my stats are being accepted… regardless, congratulations to those admitted, hang in there to the ones deferred, and my apologies to those rejected.

Let’s do our best to encourage our kids through this deferral @travelingmomof12 . Good luck to your son.

Couple of my kid’s classmates got defer from CWRU as well. Pretty much the same story, some has lower scores, some has similar scores or higher scores as my kid. The process is unknown as to why some got in, why some defer. the full stats for my kid - just for reference -

White Male -

SAT 1510 (took only once) - 760M 750CR
SAT II - Physics 790, M2 800, Biology 770
ACT 34C(didn’t sent)
GPA- 3.63 (uw) - he broke his foot w/ sports injury in freshmen yr (3.25 uw that yr, 3.8+ for soph/jun)
GPA - 3.95 (w) - (3.45 in freshmen yr…4.1+,4.3+ for sop/jun)
7 APs at time of application and 5 APs in senior yr - (two 4s APUSH, APWH and five 5s APstats, AP calc AB, AP Lang, AP physics I, AP Biology )

EC: Track and Field 6 yrs, Volunteering at hospital, nursing homes ~300 hrs, work as tutor in Kumon ~300 hrs, self-started fundraiser with friends for a local church (2 yrs/$1500) -proceeds used to repair the stained glass windows - and variety of school clubs - the usual stuff - NMSF (not reported) and AP honors (not reported) -

Send in an art supplement (guess not too many people do this - considering the interest in engineering and all those Math related classes on the high school curriculum).

major - interest in biophysics and biomedical engineering.

Accepted with significant scholarship.

Decision - will do a detail visit of the school and he really likes it esp. after the rejection from a lower ranking school that he applied ED (LOL)- we have no interest in the Ivies or MIT, Caltech type - more with state schools with strong science/engineering background (great place to be the best in school, get scholarships, and then use that to leverage for the best grad schools)… LACs never fit, few if any got any significant depth in the biophysics/engineering area…

Try to schedule alum interviews but no reply. Never visit the campus. Mountain Central region.

@etibbs
What is your major?

joining in the discussion, been ghosting while waiting for my son’s response from Case…he is my secong kid to go through the process.

Preface to my comments: seems to me from experience and talking to lots of parents of my kids’ friends, why one kid is accepted, one rejected, one gets deferral is likely dependent on the extras the kid offers and choice of major rather than nuances among the test scores and grades, since most of you are at the top of the pool of applicants -

Son - accepted EA with a nice healthy scholarship

psychology and biology
SAT M 780, E 710
ACT - not submitted
Subject Tests - didn’t take
GPA 3.9 (uw) 4.56 (w)
9 AP classes
top 100 public high school

Extras:
Mentors kids at local elementary school to prep them for theatre auditions in afterschool program, assists in casting and direction
Eagle Scout
the usual after school clubs - college bowl, honor societies, drama
no school sports
professional acting credits
community theatre
Excellent letters of recommendation
Excellent Essay(s)

Case looks at demonstrated interest - they are not a safe school for kids who prefer MIT, they are a world-class institution that should be among the first choice options…so, since it was my son’s first choice, he showed the love and we made 2 campus visits and he had an on campus interview, followed by personalized, handwritten snailmail thank you notes to both the interviewer and the regional rep who was not on campus that day. met the rep in person at a visit to his school. we live more than an easy drive away, so, yes, we had to fly or drive 9 hours to get there and stay in a hotel, not in everyone’s budget, but, with the cost of the school and his desire to go there, worth the investment.

He is over the moon, did not apply to the ivy/wanna-be ivies/ mit/cal tech type schools didn’t like the hype or the intense/anxiety riddled - hyper competitive vibe/feel when we visited those places. he wanted a really, really good research school with a reputation for getting undergrads into the labs on teams doing cutting edge research, getting grads into jobs or grad/med school due to its first-class academic reputation among grad schools at which he felt a laid back vibe. That is Case in a nutshell.

Looks like we get to visit the Rock and Roll hall of Fame a few times over the next 4 years (8 if he does med/grad school at Case as well).

@LiisaMarie
Data Science

Probably BA in Biochemistry or Chemical Biology. Goal is to try to complete undergraduate in 2 years, take MCAT/apply to Med school after next school year…hopefully. @ppst

Hi, thought I’d give some good info. for those who were deferred like my D. My D’s GC called Case on her behalf, and wasn’t expecting much, but she said the admissions person was very helpful. Apparently Case had about 12,000 EA applicants which is more than they’ve ever had, and their goal was to accept 1/3 of them. So approx. 4,000 were accepted. She told our GC that the email that comes in Jan. is very important so pay attention to that. Then she asked our GC for my D’s name and looked her up which apparently is unusual, but the GC was very happy about that. She was told my D was put in a pile that was “recommended for admission,” but for whatever reason wound up deferred. So the good news is, at least we know she made it through part of the screening process. I take this all as good news. She also told our GC that when the email comes in Jan., that students who haven’t visited should plan to do so, etc. That’s when our GC told her that my D had been to campus 3x already…

Hi @Winky1 , that’s great news. If Case is the top school for your daughter, make sure the school is aware of that. I heard a similar story today from a parent with a kiddo got the defer from Case (they also had the GC called admissions). Especially if the stats are high (1500s/ACT 34s blah blah0, let them know your strong intent to commit the offer (if given). There might be some mini-Tufts situation with Case, so they want to protect the yield and make sure the high stats kids are truly wanting to attend the school. But wow, 12000 EA applicants, easily 15% over the number from last year. Considering the merit aid and the overall cost, along with the quality of research in science/engineering areas, CRWU is a great school to try w/o beating the kiddo up against the crowds over the Ivies/MIT/Caltech type. Good luck.
