Case Western Reserve VS UMich

Which is better in terms of academic quality, social life, name recognition, and overall experience? Also how would compare specific programs between these two colleges: Biological sciences (micro, neuro), biochem, economics, and BME?

I think U. Michigan has a better name recongition across the country.

Case has a really good dental program..:o

But I hear their social life is lacking. I have a friend that went to Case and transferred to OSU because he hated it there.

bummmmpp

iollloi how long ago was it that u're friend transferred because i hear case is slowly improving, i might be wrong though.

Any more thoughts anyone? Alexandre?

Thanks

I was in the same spot you were man between case and umich. I decided to go to michigan. Case is further away from michigan, its too small, too many nerds, and too few majors/classes to choose from. But it is there to help u as much as possible with gettin into med school, but its just as hard as michigan.

so i went with the blue!

fun wise, umich is clear winner... academics, umich wins but by close margin, depends on the subject

He was a student up til the first semster this year

Thanks for all ur replies.

Even though you cannot judge everything over one student, I'm still guessing the social scene hasn't changed much at Case..not good.

It's 10k extra for me to go to UMich, but i think it might be worth it considering Michigan has a better reputation, esp. LSA (ranked #8). I'm thinking of majoring in Biochem/or Biology and Economics. Also, overall its programs are very strong.

Umardarr, are you in-state for Michigan? I'm from Ohio and Case is only about an hour away from home. Also what's your major?

I got a few more questions on Michigan:
Since its so big, are all my classes going to be huge and impersonal? Will I be able to meet with professors? Is it easy to get lost?
How hard is Michigan's grading system? Are most classes dependent on curves? Is it cutthroat competetive at Michigan?

Thanks

By the way, I'm sending in my enrollment deposit to both Case and Michigan, and then i'll pick one in the next two weeks, gives me more time to think. But i hear that u'r not allowed to apply undergrad. again to the college u turned down. What if you decline a college, say Case, without paying the deposit but then decide to transfer to Case the following year, would they consider your app?

Academically, I would say Michigan has an edge over Case. But Ann Arbor and campus life at Michigan are better than Cleveland and campus life at Case. You will have to decide for yourself whether or not it is worth spending an additional $10,000, but personally, I think it is worth it, if you can afford it.

Yea I live in Ohio too man. Mich is going to be 35-38,00 for me and Case is going to be 40-41,000 so Mich is obviously better in financial terms for me. I live in Toledo so Ann Arbor is only 30 min away from me, such a quick drive, rather than 2 1/2 hr drive to cleveland

this is what ive been thinkin about classes. Yes they are big, yes it is hard, but it all amounts to how much effort you put in. I'm sure you can meet professors if you willingly go up and ask for help and what not.

my major is biology 2..probably molecular/cellular biology. Im a premed so it will be tough. Case is well known for its science programs and preppin you up for med school but when i looked at the statistics, the admissions rate, etc for premeds were actually slightly lower than michigans.

umardarr, you got no money from Case? yeah Case is good for pre-med, around 77% acceptance to med school and i thought it was better than Michigan's (60%??)

nope, no money from case (jackasses). Yea Case has a better acceptance rate, but its just as hard as michigan in terms of studying, getting work done, etc. Case also has its PPMP so that 77% might be skewed a little. I looked at it 1 time and it said 63% admission to med school.

I was in the same boat as you. I live in Ohio and Case gave me 24K/yr merit money and $900 freshman award. I could have gone to OSU for 2k/yr out of my pocket. My parents insisted I evaluate each school and its environment since I would be there for 4 years (at least). (minimize a transfer because decision was driven by the wrong things) To them, the merit money was just a plus if I decided to go to that school. I went to Michigan twice (6 days on campus total) and visited Case and OSU multiple times (as well as others) For me, Univ Mich was by far the best choice for me even though I didn't receive any merit money. (I applied 12/1 and accepted 1/12/05). My parents have no issue with paying the $38,000 +/yr and will not go into debt. I really like Univ Mich engineering facilities (although being removed from main campus has + and -), AA, large school, and the campus. I am ready!!! and I feel I made the best decision for me. Good luck with your decision.

bump..bump..bump
