CBH notification

Bikedad…congrats on CBH.

Is there a postmark that you can see?

yay Bikedad and Allstar!

Sorry Mom2, I didn’t see your post before I left the house. Will have to check later tonight. D2 said the CBHP folks told them they would e-mail the decissions, so she was surprised that the letter beat the e-mail, but I guess notifications can get delayed when you have make-up interviews etc. Good luck, Guys.

Bikedad

Congrats to those that have received their CBH acceptance letters. Can you post what states you are located in, so we can possibly track responses. Thanks

Congrats on the good news!

Sons CBH acceptance letter came today. Great to finally know - very excited. It was postmarked on the 9th and we live in Florida.

I just want to say thanks to Mom2, for all of her help during this process. I am pretty sure we would have gotten lost in the shuffle, if it were not for her guidance.

Congrats…and you are VERY welcome!!! :)

Ok…postmarked on Tuesday…hmmm. So…some could still come tomorrow.

Son received his CBH acceptance letter today and has not yet received an email. We live in TN.

Congrats!!! :)

Thanks Mom2collegekids! He got his letter earlier this week regarding his guaranteed scholarship and I understand that there may be another round of scholarships thru CBH. Is anyone aware of any other programs we should be looking at? He is a communications major.

No CBH letter and we live in PA. If son doesn’t get it then it will be clear the school is not the right fit for him because they saw him up close and personal. He is not a shy guy. If he does get the CBH then U of A is still a contender. He is waiting to weigh all his options before making a final decision. However, we did receive the financial aid package and it was what was expected from previous letters. ($112K)

Oh and I am just curious. Although my son is not up for the Fellows award what exactly do students receive or do when in this program? The website is really clear about the CBH program and what it entails, but is very vague about the Fellows. How does it differ from CBH opportunities. Just wondering.

No CBH letter and we live in PA. If son doesn’t get it then it will be clear the school is not the right fit for him because they saw him up close and personal.

This seems odd to me. The “school” didn’t see him up close and personal…only one small program did.

More to the point…CBH is only one small aspect of the school. I have a son in CBH and if that was the “end all, be all,” at UA, then he’d be one unhappy camper because it’s only a small part of his life there. CBH is ONE class per semester. That’s it. And kids are finished after junior year…altho kids can stay for senior year if they desire.

I have another son who is not in CBH…He’s doing well, he’s being academically challenged, and I’m sure he’ll have many research opportunities (he’s a freshmen).

Many of the students who’ve been picked for the USA-Today All-American Academic team have not been in CBH. I don’t know what the % is, but I’d guess that about 1/2 or more have not been in CBH.

My son received his CBH letter today and we are very excited that it was a YES! We are located in New York.

:) So glad to hear!!!

Congrats!!!

Son got into CBHP today. I still think “the school saw him up close and personal” and thought he’d fit, since he met the people who run the school, from the deans to secretaries to the math professor. mom2collegekids , I am trying to understand your previous post. Am I correct that you meant the CBH program does not give students a smaller, more specialized college experience, just about taking a class here and there? Son seems to have a different impression. I am concerned he may get lost in a huge school since he is not a fraternity, sports type kid. Also still wondering what the Fellows is? Lastly, is there a way to find a list of companies that come to U of A campus to recruit. Or who are the top(meaning most) employers of recent U of A graduates?

Congrats all! We’ll see you in the fall!

Congrats to Almostforgot’s son. :)

What I meant is that if your son didn’t get into CBH, it wasn’t because the school rejected him. The deans and profs from other depts don’t decide who gets picked for CBH. Dr. Sharpe and Mrs. B are the ones who make the decision. The current CBH students & honors staff write notes in each students’ file. That’s why I said that if a student doesn’t get invited to CBH, it doesn’t mean that the school rejected him. It really just means that they had too many qualified applicants (getting invited to the interview is proof of high qualifications), and only a limited number of spots…so Dr. Sharpe and Mrs. B have to cut somewhere…since they make the final decision.

mom2collegekids , I am trying to understand your previous post.
Yes, being in CBH does provide that smaller college experience…no doubt about that. The CBHers are a very close-knit group. They have their own locked area where they often hang out and study - even when not doing CBH stuff.

However, the CBH program is not a major; it’s a minor… Students still have to pick a major and fulfill all the req’ts of that major. I wouldn’t say that CBH is just taking a class here or there - because of the research activities - but since it isn’t the student’s major, it obviously can’t occupy most of the students’ time - otherwise, they couldn’t get their major completed.

The many kids who aren’t in CBH have numerous opportunities for research, internships, and co-ops. That’s what I meant by saying that being in CBH isn’t the “end all, be all.” If it were, then that would mean that it would be impossible for a non-CBH student to have a full academic and social experience at Bama.

My son spends a lot of his non-class time in the CBH locked area (doing both CBH and other class assignments), but he also happily participates in other Bama activities. My younger son isn’t in CBH, and he is enjoying a full campus, academic experience, and opportunities. He has been encouraged to participate in Chem Eng internship this summer, and he probably will do it. I wouldn’t want anyone to think that if they didn’t get into CBH, then they wouldn’t have a good experience at Bama. That just wouldn’t be true. :)

As for your son not being a sports type kid. Many kids at Bama are not “into sports” per se. However, many do “catch the spirit” and end up really enjoying going to football games. For a fun activity, the CBHers compete every year in the Homecoming Lawn Display contest. The CBHers design and build a lawn display set within the parameters of the given year’s theme. They often win 1st place. This year, they won 2nd.

Again, congrats to your son! :)

Congrats to your son, Almostforgot.

I do have to agree with Mom2’s larger point here about the options at UA. UA doesn’t try, I think, to make itself smaller for the student, but rather gives the student dozens of opportunities to choose how to make it “smaller” for him/herself. All of the options are great but it’s up to the student to shape his/her educational experience.

D1, for example, did not get into Fellows or CBHP but still found research and service opportunities to have a great experience at UA and get into her #1 phd program. This, BTW, after changing her major. All my freshman parental planning went out the window, but UA was there to help her find her own way to success. And in the end that was better for her.

Again, good luck to your son for next year.

Bikedad

Also still wondering what the Fellows is? Lastly, is there a way to find a list of companies that come to U of A campus to recruit. Or who are the top(meaning most) employers of recent U of A graduates?

UFE is a group of kids who use their strong talents to develop and implement programs for the disadvantaged and those who don’t have access to needed services.

Here’s the Meet the Fellows link…you can find out more info by clicking on the pics of various UFE kids… http://honors.cbhp.ua.edu/index.php?page=contact

As for companies…It would be hard to say who are the top employers because as a national university, the students graduate in hundreds of different majors across several colleges…

Will your son be a math major? What is his likely career goal?
