Dr. Sharpe is arranging another campus visit for my daughter on Friday, October 8, during our Fall Break. This visit is more specific to the CBHP.

On our last visit, DD met with the flute instructor, Dr. LeBlanc of biological sciences, toured the Honors dorms, had lunch at Lakeside with a friend from her high school, had a campus walking tour, and had a 1-hour meeting with Jami Gates about the Honors College in general. We also went on our own and toured the rec center.

This time, Dr. Sharpe will be meeting with her to discuss the CBHP specifically. He is also going to arrange for her to meet some additional bio sciences faculty and have a tour of the department facilities. He’s also going to have a CBH student take her to lunch.

He’s asked if there’s anything else she’d like to do, so he and Jami can arrange it for her. I’m not really sure what else to ask for, expect perhaps to see if she can sit in on a biology class or lab or an honors college class.

Any ideas for other things we should ask to do while we’re there?

We already have her CBHP resume completed for the application. We’ll take a copy of it to our campus visit.

She’s already received 6 hours credit for AP English Composition and 6 for APUSH.

This year she’s taking AP English Literature, AP Biology, and AP Calculus AB. She should be able to get credit for MA 125 with a 3 on test. I’m not sure that she’d get any additional credit for the AP English Lit.

Dr. LeBlanc told her even if she makes a 5 on the AP Bio test, he recommends all his honors students take Honors Bio.

BAMAMom: Since she already has the 6 credits for AP English comp, she won’t get any additional credit for the AP English Lit class. My D took both tests & she got credit for 1.

If your daughter lands a 5 on the AP Bio, encourage her not to repeat it. She will have demonstrated that she knows the material. Several current Alabama students who post regularly would agree. My son got a 5 on the BC Calculus as a HS sophomore. Worried that he was rusty, he decided to audit the class as a freshman. A big waste of his time. He had a friend feel the same way. He also got 5s on the macro and micro economics. Again, it would have been a waste of time if he had taken the 100-level classes. He move right to the 300-level classes and had no problem.

You would hate to hear the word “bored” from your daughter, if she repeated the class and knew all the material.

On the other hand, if she is going beyond Calculus 125 and only has a 3 on the exam, she may want to take it again.

^, ^^ -
right on both accounts - DS took both AP English (Comp. and Lit) and since he also got all the credit for the one, the second test was wasted.

Also - following momreads’ advice, as well as many others on here, DS moved on from his AP Calc AB (got a 5) straight into Calc2, even though his actual high school class grade in AP Calc. hovered from C+/B-, and definitely feels it was the right decision. The material is challenging, of course, but no more so than if he repeated Calc I again. Seems profs. will almost always recommend you taking the course over again, for whatever reason, but there are threads on here from students who have moved on and feel they did the right thing.

Also - as far as CBHP, obviously it’s a great program but I feel that many (including my son) try for it based on reputation alone, the thought that if it’s hard to get in it must be a good thing. DS made the reserve list, then after talking to some profs., Dean Sharpe, and students in his major at Bama Bound, and realizing the scheduling issues it would present incl. making it much harder for him to double major outside his college, concluded that it was not for him. He is in a smaller major so it doesn’t appear that not having CBHP will impact his ability to do research if he wants.

I know that CBHP is a flagship program and students love it, just saying that DS went into the app. with just the online info about the program, not realizing that it may not be for him. Dr. Sharpe will have all the info you need to see if it’s right for you.

Great to hear of your upcoming visit! Roll Tide!

*Dr. LeBlanc told her even if she makes a 5 on the AP Bio test, he recommends all his honors students take Honors Bio. *

I know that some advisors/profs make such recommendations because some schools don’t do a good job with labs and instruction, even if the kid gets a 5 on the exam.

Heck…some schools barely do labs at all in their science classes.

You know your child’s school. If you believe that your child got a strong education in those subjects and had many informative labs, then your child can skip. My kids went to a Catholic high school with strong math and science programs so they easily skipped Cal, bio, and chem without any problems.

If your child’s school is not known to be academically strong, then you might want your child to retake the courses.

And, there is some benefit to taking at least one honors class with Dr. Caldwell if you’re interested in working in the Caldwell Lab.
