D has ATT. I've heard it doesn't work very well at Oberlin. Which cell service works best?

My son had Verizon and never had problems, at least none that I heard about. He just graduated. We frequently talked when he as in various places on campus and we never had a dropped call.

I don’t know why anyone has ATT. I guess it works fine if you’re in a big northeastern metro area or in Cali. My D has Verizon too. She was a first year. It worked EVERYWHERE.

Word is that ATT is planning to upgrade its service in the area significantly this fall/winter.

I hope so Dave–that would be great news! My son saved up his money last summer for an iphone and could only talk to us hanging outside his dorm room by his toes…

Wow, upgraded AT&T service would be great. I have so much trouble.

most cell phone providers don’t work well in Oberlin. I get about two bars most places I go, and sometimes in the practice rooms I don’t have service at all. but surprisingly, Alltell has the best coverage here.

AT&T is garbage. And the iPhone is about to be recalled.

In the interest of a more tempered response – some people have AT&T because they live in small towns in the northeast where the ONLY cell coverage is provided by AT&T. Our daughter’s coverage was worse her first year – probably having to do with her particular dorm. It was ok last year – few problems, but I’m sure she’ll appreciate upgraded service.

Actually his year-old iphone works perfectly, as does our AT&T coverage everywhere in the US…other than Oberlin, OH!!!

Verizon seems to be the most popular/widely recommended carrier. I’ve also had positive experiences with T-Mobile coverage in Oberlin.

please just the facts

I was in Oberlin a week ago and Verizon worked perfectly, except inside a lecture hall, where nobody should need to use a phone anyway. :p

Our daughter was just there for the high school vocal camp…it was tough connecting with her at times.

Has anyone put in a “land line” for their kid?

@ahuvah: Landlines are already installed in every dorm room.

does that mean in each room? do the kids need to bring their own phone or is that “supplied”?

You have to bring your own phone (landline) but nobody does. Everyone has a cell phone.

You can either bring your own phone or borrow one from the school. Yes, in each room. And not everyone has a cell phone, though most do.

how do the students pay for the use of the landline? do they have to sign up with a particular phone service?
