cell phone reception?

Any advice on which company provides best reception at Tulane? Thanks.

not sure which is the best, but our D has cingular and the reception is generally OK, but not always perfect...

Second here for Cingular. Ours has it, too, as do we, so it's free within the family, and the service was spotty for the first little while after he returned last year, but it's seemed fine lately all the time. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the best, especially if you get separate contracts. We had them and it was ridiculously expensive for our purposes, as we don't use the phones enough, and the rollover minutes are going "bad" like crazy now. Now that we'll likely add him as another line onto a single family contract, it will start to make more sense.

Just look realistically at the details according to how you'll actualy use your phone before you decide how to put it all together and, if your family already has a contract you can join, at least consider that. OTOH, I'm guessing most people talk on their cell phones more than we do even though we have no land line.

We have Verizon, and my S had no problems on a recent weekend visit there. WE have a nationwide service family plan with 4 members, and it's pretty reasonable. My S tends to have very brief phone conversations, but I know girls talk far more! lol

I have T-Mobile and have not had any major problems with reception. The only problems I have ever had on campus involve being on the 8th floor of Butler and getting spotty coverage. Also, earlier this year Cingular seemed to stop covering the entire uptown area or something. I knew a lot of people that simply could not use their phone. It was probably a fluke incident though.

God!
I'm so glad T-Mobile works because a) I'm not switching and b) I have no intention of springing for a land line unless another parent can give us a good reason to do so.
Other parents/students, feel free to chime in.

Haven't heard son complain of any problems with Sprint on or off campus.

If I remember correctly, as long as your son or daughter is on campus, you don't have to "spring" for anything to get a land line. I seem to recall that there is one available as part of the room package. I could be wrong, but it's easy ennoough to check out if you're about to sign up for a dorm in one of the buildings. Of course, that doesn't cover long distance, but e-mail, IM and facebook seem to be the media of choice there most of the time, anyway.

There is a landline with a number for you automatically. Given, almost noone I know actually HAS a landline phone to attach to the phone jack, so if you have a landline phone to attach, the better for you I guess.

I have only seen one use of it. I stayed here for Easter Break and on of my friends actually received a basket of some kind with perishables in it on the weekend. Seeing as it was the weekend and Bruff was closed, it was taken in by the department of Public Health (her major). Well they called her on the landline and she went and picked it up. That is the only time I have ever seen the landline ring or be called really.

We made S and his roommate plug in a landline phone we brought when they were freshmen. Was never used and came back home with us. Still in a box in the basement......

Verizon has been fine for me.

I've never heard of anyone ever having problems with any cell phone provider. We are in the middle of a big city, after all. I have Verizon, and it's great; even when I spent the weekend in rural Mississippi, I could get service.

As for land lines, it's not worth it at all. I don't have a phone in my room (though Tulane provides a number, I believe, for free) and I never thought twice about it. My friend has a phone and he's used it once--to call his cell phone when he couldn't find that. I don't think it's worth it if you have a cell.
