<p>I have had the worst experience with verizon at the academy. The only place that it worked was outside on the terrazzo and during the winter that is not very pleasant, and also as four degrees you wont be able to use them on the terrazzo until at least christmas anyway. I strongly recommend CINGULAR, as i have never had a problem with the service anywhere, including elevators and lower level rooms. I definately do NOT recommend Verizon as i rarely had a good signal with them. </p>
<p>I guess for every bad storry there is a good one - I have Verizon and I'm in Vandy Tower. I get great reception in my room and everywhere else I've taken my phone. I do believe that different phones have better or worse reception though. People that have the internal antennas seem to have a harder time. Samsung has always been a strong phone with good reception and transmission.</p>
<p>As far as VoIP goes, it's not allowed. As it was said, the sight picture talks about the network as a government only type situation. It goes into further detail to say that P2P sharing, messaging, and VoIP are not allowed. They back that policy up by totally shutting down access to the network to those programs (certain programs use certain ports so they block ports - other programs connect to an external site and they block that site).</p>
<p>Also, don't count on bringing a webcam to talk face to face with anyone. I did last year thinking it would help me out with friends and family but the network definitely killed that one - don't waste your money.</p>
<p>Also, cell phone reception heavily depends on whether you have an "inside" toom facing the inner quad or an "outside" room facing the Terrazzo or other scenery. I just moved to an outside room and my reception is perfect now. it used to be pretty finicky.</p>
